The X-MADIS Drone Defeat System of Sierra Nevada Works on the Move

Nowadays the development of sophisticated drone solutions goes hand in hand with the development of, sometimes, even better counter-drone solutions. Such is the case with the counter-drone system created by a team of Sierra Nevada that works on the move. The company showed its X-MADIS mobile drone defeat system installed on a Chevy Colorado pickup truck at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) from 21st to 24th May 2018, reported Defense News.

The C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System) was developed for a customer within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) over the past year by Sierra Nevada in partnership with Ascentvision and the Israeli company RADA Technologies Inc.

Sierra Nevada is responsible for the electronic warfare part of the solution, RADA – for the radar technologies, and Ascentvision – for the electro-optical, software and user-interface expertise.

The X-MADIS mobile drone defeat system can detect, identify and defeat threats on the move at up to 80 km/h and the good news is that only a single operator can manage the system from the cab of the Chevy Colorado pickup truck when such is the case.

Mounting on a truck is not the only option for the X-MADIS. It can be integrated on other military-specific platforms, including a Polaris MRZR vehicle, which has much smaller dimensions, and a mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle, as well as on a palette or a boat. The configuration, in which the current DoD customer uses it, is fixed.

The system was showcased on a pickup truck at SOFIC in order to be demonstrated that it can be used by non-DoD customers as well and when a climate-controlled, road-worthy vehicle would be chosen.

The Ukranian Malyshev Factory (formerly the Kharkiv Locomotive Factory), located in Kharkiv, Ukraine and part of the State Concern UkrOboronProm (Ukrainian Defence Industry), has started a new production line for BTR-4E experimental hulls, reported Shephard Media.

Malyshev Factory, named after the Soviet industrialist Vyacheslav Malyshev, was found in 1895 as the Kharkiv Locomotive Factory.

“After successful product manufacture and testing, the SE Malyshev Factory will receive a permit (qualification) for manufacturing. As a result of passing of all these stages, we will be able to begin mass production of hulls,” explained the Commercial Director of the Factory, Dmytro Kolesnikov.

The preparatory works for the production of the first batch of BTR-4E hulls are on-going. In that connection the basic materials are already received, as well as the relevant equipment.

The BTR-4 is a 8×8 wheeled armoured personnel carrier designed and manufactured in Ukraine. Its prototype was shown for the first time in June 2006 at the Aviasvit 2006 exhibition in Ukraine.

The Factory also has plans to produce hulls for the BTR-3E and for that purpose the preparatory works are initiated and stands and a roll-over machine have been purchased.

The BTR-3 is also an 8×8-wheeled armoured personnel carrier designed in the UAE and manufactured in Ukraine.

BAE Systems is developing software modelling conflicts for DARPA. This was announced from the company last week on Monday, 11 June 2018.

DARPA – the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is sponsoring the project, under which it will be developed autonomy modelling software for the needs of military planners, who, by using that software, will better understand the reasons for the global conflicts.

The works on the software development is being executed in the facilities of BAE Systems in Burlington (Massachusetts) and Arlington (Virginia).

The software, which is being developed by BAE Systems, is the first of its kind and is called CONTEXTS (Causal Modelling for Knowledge Transfer, Exploration, and Temporal Simulation). It will create an interactive model of the operational environment, which will help planners to analyse the reasons leading to a certain conflict and evaluate potential approaches.

The product line director of the Autonomy, Controls, and Estimation group at BAE Systems, Chris Eisenbies, stated, “Military planners often conduct manual research and use limited modelling tools to generate models and evaluate conflict situations, which are extremely time consuming and labour intensive. To break down these barriers, CONTEXTS will use reasoning algorithms and simulations with the goal to give planners a quicker and deeper understanding of conflicts to help avoid unexpected and counterintuitive outcomes.”

Within the framework of the international defence and security show Eurosatory 2018 (11-15 June), on 11th June, the aircraft maker Daher announced the new ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) configuration of its TBM 910 and TBM 930, which are the latest members of the TBM family of the Company of very fast single-engine turboprop aircrafts.

Nicolas Chabbert, Daher Airplane Business Unit Director, said, “The new TBM ISR version brings a fast, all-weather airborne platform to the market for surveillance operations and aerial photography, with a very competitive cost-performance ratio compared to existing solutions. As a result, we are now offering the TBM ISR as an alternative – or complement – to medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles and to heavier aircraft in a platform that is rapid and efficient to deploy, with limited logistics requirements.”

In the new configuration, the TBM 910 and TBM 930 can execute various defence, security, medical evacuation and transport missions and have the ability to be reconfigured rapidly for various tasks. The appropriate power generation allows integration of a complete range of mission equipment. Other included advantages are the reduced external noise and the shortened take-off and landing distances. Besides the advanced and improved technology integrated in the new TBM ISR version, the human-machine is also not forgotten and its modern interface allows comfortable flight for the crew during the long missions.

The French multinational company Thales has announced on 11th June an artillery version of its TopAxyz high performance IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) for mobile artillery systems, reported Shephard Media.

The TopAxyz artillery version has been developed for the purposes of the land forces and their need of digitalising various types of artillery pieces compatible with new fire control and weapon management systems, the architectures of which support modern deployment concepts.

Thanks to the TopAxyz the mission duration will be reduced, because the unit is up and running in only 5 minutes. Lost GPS signal is not a problem if the TopAxyz is available, because it can operate autonomously. Pixyz 22 tri-axis ring laser gyro technology is integrated in it for stability in tough environments, as well as advanced ITAR-free inertial sensors for accuracy of position, heading, attitude and airspeed data, even in environments, where electronic countermeasures are undertaken. The unique architecture of the TopAxyz developed for very high performance is unlike any other in the world, by involving two data channels instead of one channel like in other systems.

Inertial navigation systems have been developed by Thales for more than 30 years and they have been integrated in platforms like the Ariane 5 rocket, Mirage 2000, Tiger helicopters, ATR-600, and A350-XWB. Therefore, the TopAxyz, containing proven advanced technologies, has shown its remarkable performance in aerospace applications and now it is already available for land and naval forces as well by offering similar operational advantages.
