Ivan Cholakov: This shooting complex is an opportunity of discovering new horizons in our manufacturing

Ivan Cholakov: This shooting complex is an opportunity of discovering new horizons in our manufacturing

PANAGYURISHTE (Bulgaria), February 5, 2018, Author Boyko Nikolov (Bm)

On 5th Feb. 2018 it was officially opened the new and so far the only shooting complex “Optix” in the town of Panagyurishte.

Guests of the ceremony were the District Governor of Pazardzhik Municipality Mr. Stefan Mirev, the Mayor of Panagyurishte Municipality Mr. Nikola Belishki, the Brigadier General and Commander of the 68th Special Forces Brigade – Gen. Yavor Mateev, the World Shooting Champion Anna Pelova, and representatives of the local business, guests, friends, and employees of OPTIX JSC.

“It’s the 19th time when we celebrate the Investment Day of OPTIX. We managed to establish a unique tradition at the beginning of each year to report what we have achieved the previous year. To look back and assess what we have built up during the last 12 months,” started his speech Eng. Ivan Cholakov – the Executive Manager of OPTIX JSC.

“Probably this tradition is due to the fact that we started from nothing, without resources, without buildings, without equipment, but with the clear consciousness that we are on the right path and the future should show that our strategy is correct.

The shooting complex “Optix” gives us the opportunity of discovering new horizons in our manufacturing. We will test here the products and work of our designers for being able to offer the market the best possible that can be found on the international market and to offer our customers reliable optical systems of high quality.

The shooting complex “Optix” restores another tradition as well. The citizens and guests of Panagyurishte Municipality and the region will be able to train in the complex their professional and amateur shooting skills. There are four 50-meter corridors in the complex, where it can be used any type of small arms. In addition, the electronic and multimedia system allows shooting and training of skills of hunting big and winged game, shooting at moving or fixed targets, or participation in improvised tactical activities,” underlined Eng. Cholakov in his presentation.

OPTIX JSC is one of the optical giants not only in Bulgaria, but on the Balkans as well. During the years the Company has strengthened its position in Bulgaria and on the international markets as a manufacturer of distinguishable optical systems of high-quality.

Over 800 people are employed in OPTIX JSC, and 35% of them are with higher education. The average age of the employees and workers is 35 years. Eng. Cholakov reminded that products of the Company are successfully being sold in over 45 countries and increase each year, as well as that their optical technologies guard the boundaries of six countries at the moment.

“At the moment OPTIX covers approximately 84,000 square meters and we expect that, next year, our manufacturing area will grow to 100,000 square meters. We are proud of our young engineers, specialists, and workers. We are sure that we are on the right path as what we have achieved makes us a definite leader in the sphere of optical technologies and military industry. I promise you that we will follow this path and we will follow our dreams,” concluded in his speech Eng. Cholakov.

A team of Bm was invited to test the multimedia system for simulated shooting with long-barrelled weapons. It is developed under specialized software with excellent graphical rendering and animation, as well as wide screen, which makes it effective, interesting, and fascinating when selecting a shooting event. The multimedia system allows people to gain a clear understanding of the real use of small arms, as well as to improve their skills in relation to speed and observation. In addition to long-barrelled weapons, the system allows the use of pistols.

Opticoelectron Group Has Doubled Its Production in Three Years

Opticoelectron Group Has Doubled Its Production in Three Years

PANAGYURISHTE (Bulgaria), February 2, 2018, Author: Michail Vanchev ( Photo: PFO Archive

Measured investments of approximately EUR 2 million per annum during the last 5-6 years and stepping on new markets in Asia – these are the two factors, which have brought to doubling of the civil and military production of the companies from Opticoelectron Group in three years.

“Plant for Optics”, “Optomechanic”, and “Ectron” belong to the Group, which is technologically connected with all companies and FMB AD. “In 2017 we went beyond the sales amount of BGN 38 million through manufacturing and selling of our products and after a long interruption we started to sell again special products to the Border Police. Only the Bulgarian Army, for the last 20 years, has not showed interest in our products”, comments for “Capital” Eng. Ivan Garchev, the Executive Director of “Opticoelectron”.

The Bulgarian market represents only 3-4% of the total sales of the Company of the town of Panagyurishte. The personnel of all companies from the Group number over 700 people, one fourth of which are engineers.

Who Purchases?
Most often the purchasers of the production are armies that look for contemporary means for direct and remote observation of people and machines.

“Even China – the country that may produce everything cheap – when it concerns defense machinery, gives money for products of the highest quality like ours. Smaller Asian countries also purchase. The companies from the Group of Opticoelectron traditionally win tenders in the EU as well. We add value to the products for the military industry through including in them not only optical parts, including infrared optics, but also more electronic, fine mechanical parts and units,” explains Ivan Garchev.

From Opticoelectron, Bulgaria purchases new devices and equipment for the border guards. During the last 2 years the Company won 4 tenders at the total amount of BGN 5,200,000. Two of them are for supply of searchlight for the border policemen. The Company also supplies three mobile surveillance posts. They are put on military trucks in a special container and include devices for day and night surveillance of our land border with a range of several kilometres. The fourth tender is for repair of thermal imaging cameras and building of new posts for technical surveillance of the Bulgarian borders.

The civil production, manufactured by the Company in the town of Panagyurishte, is also high-tech one. Most often the micro-optical products of the Group are purchased and serve in the medical industry. “We create the optics for endoscopes and very powerful microscopes. Most of the European endoscopes contain elements, created by us,” says Eng. Ivan Garchev. The major markets of the managed by him Company are EU states – Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, and Spain.

The Investments
The most essential contribution for the increased production in Opticoelectron is of the acquired new technologies, thanks to which the Company entered the markets for ultra-precision technics and optics. “The added value and prices of these products are higher in comparison to the traditional production of the companies from the Group. Entering new markets is also related to investments for promotion of our products, as well as to establishing of new partnerships,” comments the Executive Director of the Company.

As the most important for the sudden increase of the production he defines the investments in CNC machines and the establishment of a new warehouse for treating of parts for thermal imaging devices. “We acquired and already work with new installations for coating of aluminium parts. In the “Plant for Optics” we invested resources for installations for special coatings of optical parts. We have new generation machines – CNC – for treating of optical parts. In 2017 we opened a new warehouse for infrared optics. The total investment in it is approximately EUR 2 million,” explains Eng. Ivan Garchev.

New Patents
Within two years the Company registered in the Patent Authority two of its useful models. One of them is night vision aviator glasses, and the second one is a surveillance module, the construction of which allows the high resolution of the image to be kept when the mirror gradient changes.

However, the sudden increase of the production sets in front of the company management team significant challenges. Within the last 3 years the labour efficiency has increased by approximately 25%, which is a result from the made investments and improved personnel qualification. According to Eng. Ivan Garchev they already feel the lack of specialized staff. The long-term solutions to that issue, which they apply here, are two. The Company has supported financially, since years, by two classes of the specialized professional high school in the town of Panagyurishte, but the job “temptations” for the high school graduates are a lot, including in the town of Panagyurishte itself. The Company solves the issue of the constantly growing demand for its production and the lack of workers through cooperation with other companies.

The management analyses show that the Group companies are not endangered of investment “overheating”, because the main financial source for the new investments is the own profit. The market driver of the current growth is the military industry, but if the armed conflicts decrease, the Company has a ready strategic solution for transition to civil production.

The patent Office circulated a special video about Opticoelectron

The Patent Office of Republic of Bulgaria circulated a special video about the located near the town of Panagyurishte optical company Opticoelectron Group JSCo that became “Innovative Company for 2017”. As we have already written in November 2017, Opticoelectron was awarded for two of its patents – night vision aviator glasses and a surveillance module. Then the award was bestowed by the Deputy Minister of Economy Mr. Lachezar Borisov.

“Lots of things changed within the last 15 years. Company sales grew, work increased, we stepped on new markets and redirected the company, and from a Warsaw company we turned it into a global one. I think that, in each company, people are in the first place. Machines and technologies may be implemented very quickly through a financial resource, but, for us, people and traditions are the most important. I am proud that during the last years we established a very strong team and hope that results will be even better during the coming years,” says in the video Eng. Ivan Garchev, CEO of Opticoelectron.

The qualitative team is not just words of Eng. Garchev without sense and meaning. It shall be reminded that in 2015, Eng. Stoyan Hristov, PhD, the mechanical engineer in the fundamental design unit of the company, won the distinction “Inventor of the Year” in the category “Mechanical Engineering and Construction” together with the Assoc. Prof. Lachezar Stoev from the Technical University of Sofia. Their mutual elaborations and new methods in the process of grinding allow achievement of high accuracy and homogeneous roughness of surfaces in case of longitudinal grinding of rotational parts.

Opticoelectron Group JSCo is the second largest company in the town of Panagyurishte and the second largest employer in the town. About 700 employees work at the territory of the industrial park, of which 150 are highly qualified engineers and PhD students. The products with the brand of “Opticoelectron” are traded all over the world and have been a synonym for quality in the field of optical manufacturing for more than 46 years.
