Cutting of the first steel plate of BN803


Cutting of the first steel plate for the new project – 2’300 m3 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger for Baggerbedrijf de Boer – Dutch Dredging took place at MTG Dolphin on 19th of October April 2017.

This is the third project, built in cooperation and by order of Royal IHC for Dutch Dredging.

The ship will be 80 m of length, 15 m of breadth and with 2’300 m3 of hopper capacity.

The vessel is being built under the class of Bureau Veritas.

The Contract was signed in July 2017 and the delivery of the vessel is expected in January 2019.

In the course of the upcoming major military projects in Bulgaria, related to the modernization of our army in the Naval-Air-Land directions, in the background seemed to be facts of the Bulgarian military industry that deserve their attention.

This is the case with one of the most innovative military developments in the field of optical production – SWIR technology.

What is SWIR?
You have to look through a SWIR camera to understand for yourself the capabilities of the technology. Then they get ideas, where and how the technology can be used. In simple words – you see the invisible. The test that we had made in the far 2013, in London, during the DSEi exhibition was the following:

– Unintentionally or not but, then, our “laboratory mice” had been Bulgarian politicians and diplomats, part of the Bulgarian delegation at the exhibition. We had put sunglasses on one of our guests and we had directed SWIRECON 50 lens against him. What had appeared on the computer, as a video signal and what we had saw, were the eyes of the man with the sunglasses.

The more complicated explanation is that SWIR technology operates in the field of shortwave infrared optics, which is its real name – Short Wave InfraRed. I.e. this type of optics operates with light in a range of 0.9 to 1.7 microns and in the range of 0.7 to 2.5 microns, as well. This allows SWIR cameras to capture the light emitted from the earth’s atmosphere at night

What is the application of SWIR technology?
Eng. Nikolay Tsonevski, Director of the SWIRECON Program at Opticoelectron, shares that:
“SWIR Technologies have a great operating application. Unlike some military optical products that are for military purposes only, this type of lens can be “divided” in its use. In the civilian life, it would find a wonderful application in the automotive industry – to see through fog while driving, in civil defense, in the event of a fire – for smoke elimination and fire detection. In medicine, diagnosis will become more accurate and easier – details are seen deep in the retina of the human eye, the veins are seen more clearly if we look through the skin of a person, etc. Generally, the fact that the technology is working exactly in the shortwave infrared spectrum, allows this type of lens to be used almost everywhere.”

Our research shows that SWIR technology products can be used in dozens of our daily life activities – for check of products (is the apple bad inside, is the dark bottle full or empty), on production line in the food industry, in agriculture (inspection of crop quality), in mining (detecting new mines), astronomy, etc.

SWIR and the military industry
Like the most inventions that we use in our civilian everyday life, SWIR comes from the military industry. In this field, three main products are distinguished – products for day, night and thermal vision surveillance. SWIR may (most likely and do) shatter the notion of using night or thermal vision imaging scopes for security and surveillance. Comparing the three products, the advantages of SWIR stand out in the forefront:

– Compared to night scopes, SWIRECON sees up to 1.7 microns (nighttime to 0.9 microns). That’s why night scopes cannot see eye-safe lasers operating at 1.54 microns or at 1,064 microns, while SWIR can. The picture that we can see during a night surveillance by a SWIR camera is clearer and more detailed.
– Compared to thermal imaging scopes, SWIR cameras see more clearly and better through fog and sea haze, while thermal vision cameras – no. Shortwave infrared devices see clearly through a simple window or through a car window, while the thermal cameras – not.

Who produces SWIR lenses in Bulgaria?
Opticoelectron is the first and the only company in Bulgaria to develop and sell SWIR lenses on international markets. Actually, a little – known fact is that it is one of the first companies in the world that years ago had managed to develop and demonstrate the first working prototype of a SWIR camera.

On July 27, the company organized a cocktail for its partners at the Central Military Club – Sofia. The party was attended by a large number of OPTIX friends as the girls from the most modern Bulgarian pop band “4 Magic” took care for the good atmosphere of the event. Special address from the Ministry of Defence was presented by the Deputy minister Atanas Zapryanov. The doyen of the Association of the Bulgarian Military Industry Academician Stefan Vodenicharov presented the greetings from the name of the organization.

One day later, on the territory of the Industrial zone “Doctor Chochev”, the company’s annual corporate party was held. Full of positive emotions, the celebration was definitely the most memorable birthday till now. Special guests of the event were the pop singer Miro, the band ”Deep Zone Project” and the dance group “Tangra” from Popintsi. The evening ended with a splendid fireworks show, as meanwhile the Executive Director Mr. Ivan Cholakov traditionally cut the birthday cake.

About € 4 million has been invested during the 12 months of the past 2017 in technological equipment, real estate and training of the personnel, learned

“We invested about € 2 million in the purchase of new machines and facilities, as well as for building of a separate manufacturing unit for infrared equipment – workshop “Crystals”. About € 1.9 million was invested in real estate and about € 180,000 – in training of the personnel mainly on foreign language education and improvement of the professional qualification of our colleagues,” commented Eng. Ivan Garchev, CEO of the Company.

The annual report also clarified that, in 2017, funds have also been invested in building of a new production area for assembly and integration of mobile, stationary, and semi-stationary systems and posts for surveillance and security. The total recapitulation shows that, from that unit in the manufacturing cycle of the Company, it has been integrated 28 systems for the needs of both the Bulgarian Border Police and customers from Scandinavia.

An analysis of shows that during the last three years Opticoelectron and the companies within its structure do not spare funds for investments. On average, it is invested between € 1.5 million and € 2 million per year. Already in 2015 it was decided a new investment period to be started in the history of Opticoelectron. This happened through the purchase of a new vacuum system for placing of thin optical layers at the amount of several million euros. Thus the results were not late and already during the same year Opticoelectron took the prestigious 9th place in the Gepard ranking for Bulgaria’s most dynamically developing companies.

“From 2015 till now we have reported growth in the sales of our products worldwide. Nieuwpoort Hosted a Demonstration of SafeShore Developed in Partnership with OPTIX, Bulgaria

The SafeShore detection system, developed with the participation of the Bulgarian company OPTIX JSC, was shown on 25th May 2018 in the first demo event at the North Sea shoreline in Nieuwpoort (Belgium), announced to from Optix co.

The event was attended by end-users, EC members and representatives of the local and national press and television.

First the objectives and current achievements of the SafeShore Project were presented to the attendees, after which there was a demonstration of the system on the beach.

The system may detect and track various types of vessels, individual people, swimming or paddling towards the shore, low altitude airborne objects in the shape of drones, etc. However, as of the moment, the SafeShore cannot distinguish a drone from a flying bird, for example, that is why it will not be operational immediately.

The SafeShore Project is funded by the European Commission and is being implemented by a consortium of well-balanced combination of partners. One of the key partners is the Bulgarian company OPTIX JSC, which has produced some of the components integrated in the SafeShore system and we, from, are very proud of that fact.

The SafeShore features the following basic advantages: low cost per square meter, low weight components, low energy consumption, no need of special cooling system, and solar-based battery charging.

One of the main objectives of the Project is detection of Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), which are too small to be detected by regular costal radars due to their low RCS (Radar Cross Section). They may depart from yachts, for example, and be used by smugglers and terrorists. The situation is the same with the low altitude guided parachutes, which are also hard for detection by standard radars. Such parachutes may be dropped from airplanes, which are not visible from the shore, and be used for deploying equipment, explosives, etc. For that purpose 3D LIDAR, which creates a virtual dome shield over the protected area shield with a radius of about 250-300m, is integrated in the system. The SafeShore will be fixed on mobile platforms. For ensuring of a continuous detection shield along the shoreline, there will be overlapping between the areas, protected by each platform of about 50 m.

The SafeShore system will operate in addition to the standard radar systems, by covering the existing gaps in the defence due to technological issues as mentioned above.
