For the first time, we’ve caught a glimpse of Russia’s newest guided munition, the UMPB D-30SN, nestled under the wing of the Su-34 front-line bomber. The footage was shared by Kirill Fedorov’s channel just last night. “Our cherished Su-34 bomber affectionately dubbed the duckling, is seen deploying the UMPB D-30SN planning bombs on Ukrainian positions in Kharkiv,” read the post.

News about this advanced high-precision weapon surfaced in early March. There were indications that it was being used in combat to target enemy positions within the war zone in Ukraine.

Details on the new weapon were initially revealed by the Fighterbomber community. According to their report, the bomb sports a 300mm diameter, comes equipped with a satellite navigation system, and an inertial guidance system, and carries a warhead weighing approximately 230 kg. Its design features include a warhead, a control unit, a jet engine, and wings that deploy during flight.

Munitions play a crucial role in neutralizing enemy targets, whether launched from combat aircraft or rocket artillery systems. We’re talking about the 300-mm reactive volley firing system known as “Tornado-S.” In this context, the D-30SN is mounted on a standard missile section designed for the system’s projectiles.

By incorporating an engine and wings, the combat range of the ammunition is extended. This enhancement allows MLRS [Multiple Launch Rocket System] crews and combat aviation pilots to operate safely, minimizing the risk of threats from the enemy.

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

On February 21, 2022, Russia stated that its border facility was attacked by Ukrainian forces, resulting in the deaths of five Ukrainian fighters. However, Ukraine quickly dismissed these allegations, labeling them as ‘false flags’.

In a notable move on the same day, Russia announced it officially recognized the self-proclaimed areas of DPR and LPR. Interestingly, according to Russian President Putin, this recognition covered all the Ukrainian regions. Following this declaration, Putin sent a battalion of Russia’s military forces, tanks included, into these areas.

Fast forward to February 24, 2022, global headlines were dominated by a significant incident. Putin commanded a forceful military assault on Ukraine. Led by Russia’s impressive Armed Forces positioned at the Ukrainian border, this assault wasn’t spontaneous but a premeditated action. Despite the circumstances resembling a war, the Russian government refrains from using this term. They’d rather refer to it as a “special military operation”.
