Ukraine gets thousands of Chinese UAVs to pressure Russian troops

Thousands of Chinese civilian drones were bought by commercial networks to help the Ukrainian armed forces against the Russian army. China’s 2,000 “leisure” drones will boost intelligence, surveillance, and precision artillery fire.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation announced the news on Twitter (now X). He said that the Ukrainian drone army is sending almost 2,000 Autel EVO MAX 4T to the front. These drones are equipped with an AI tool that automatically detects and tracks targets. Quality data means more brilliant results from UAV strike units. “Stay tuned,” concluded his tweet, which was accompanied by a video of the purchased products.

The market is booming

Chinese companies making recreational civilian drones have made a lot of money over the past year and a half since the war in Ukraine. It is not a regulated market as drones are civilian. But they are an excellent device for reconnaissance and precision aiming of artillery shells. In reality, Russia and Ukraine are buying Chinese aircraft. So, while Russia uses Chinese DJI drones, Ukraine buys Autel EVO MAX 4T.

In a striking development, it appears that Russia has considerably curtailed its reliance on imported UAVs. This fact has been corroborated by their conspicuous absence from the promotional videos circulated by the Russian Ministry of Defense [RuMoD] over the last half year.

The drone army

In 2020, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky set forth a groundbreaking initiative christened the Drone Army. This globally crowd-funded venture aims to accumulate an extensive stockpile of drones, primarily for military applications.

The fund enables the acquisition of off-the-shelf drones. Concurrently, it fuels the creation and manufacture of cutting-edge, locally-made drones. This pioneering endeavor is a collaboration between Ukraine’s nascent state defense businesses and their private industry counterparts.

In a novel approach, Ukraine has repurposed civilian and recreational unmanned aerial vehicles [UAVs] for military use against Russian forces. These drones, originally designed for non-combat uses, have been retrofitted with simple releasing mechanisms and equipped with grenades. This ingenious use of technology allows them to target trenches and strike armored vehicles through open hatches.

This repurposed technology doesn’t stop there. In addition to the grenade-toting drones, they have also launched larger quadcopters rigged with heavy-duty explosives and rocket-propelled grenades [RPGs]. The operational objective here is to inflict significant damage on Russian armor.
