ANKARA, TURKEY — Turkish media has released a video it claims shows a Russian Air Force [VKS] Su-27 attempting to take down a Ukrainian Bayrakatar TB2 drone. The video was released five days after two Su-27s downed a US Air Force NQ-9 Reaper in the waters of the Black Sea through a fuel leak. The Turkish media claim that this incident also happened over the waters of the Black Sea.
SavunmaSanayiST.com published the video claiming that the drone was Ukrainian and the fighter “is believed to be a Su-27”. The video shows two attempts to take down Bayraktar TB2. It is not clear whether the two attempts were made by the same fighter or, as was the case with the American drone, two fighters were involved.
In both attempts, the drone seriously shakes. But in both attempts, Bayraktar TB2 managed to recover its position without being take down in the waters of the Black Sea. It is seen that the drone even manages to maintain a flight height which is above 19,000 feet.
Contrast the two incidents
Turkish experts suggest that the drone did not go down because, unlike the MQ-9 collision, in this incident, the Russian fighter [s] did not collide with the drone’s rear propeller. In this way, the “jet wash” was able to slightly disrupt the thrust of the drone to the extent that it would not allow it to lose operational capability and fall into the sea waters.
Another thing is also striking – in this case, the combat aircraft did not use missiles to shoot down the Ukrainian drone. If in the MQ-9 incident, the use of missiles could have led to serious “verbal skirmishes” between Washington and Moscow, even escalating the conflict, in this case, the Russians were within their rights to shoot down the Ukrainian drone with missiles. Perhaps, some opinions prevail, the Russian fighters were not armed with missiles.
2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
On 21 February 2022, Russia claimed that Ukrainian shelling had destroyed an FSB border facility. Russia claimed that it had killed 5 Ukrainian soldiers. They tried to cross into Russian territory. Ukraine denied being involved in both incidents and called them a false flag.
On the same day, the Russian government formally recognized the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR. According to Putin not only in their de-facto controlled areas, but the Ukrainian Oblasts as a whole. Putin ordered Russian troops, including tanks, to enter the regions.
On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces previously concentrated along the border. The invasion followed by targeted airstrikes of military buildings in the country, as well as tanks entering via the Belarus border.
Russia has so far not recognized the invasion of Ukraine as a “war”, although that is exactly what it is, claiming that it is a “special military operation”. According to the UN, a “special military operation” can only take place after a UN resolution. There is no such resolution. So this is an invasion and war against Ukraine.
