ANKARA, TURKEY — Developed by Roketsan, the TRG-230-IHA is a supersonic air-to-ground ballistic missile. The first test firing of the TRG-230-IHA missile was carried out by the HALE Akinci UCAV in December 2022. The TRG-230-IHA supersonic air-to-ground ballistic missile has a range of 150+ kilometers.

In December, the HALE Akinci UCAV took off from Chorlu to perform the first firing test of the TRG-230-IHA. The drone flies approximately 700 kilometers, reaching the test site in Sinop. Reaching the firing point, the drone fires the TRG-230-IHA missile. This happens at an altitude of 25,000 feet. Due to the launch and its precise targeting, the missile successfully hits the target. The distance from which the missile hits the target is 100 km.

About TRG-230-IHA

The effective range of the missile is 150 kilometers depending on the speed and height at which it is launched. The new Turkish missile has a warhead with a particle effect. The TRG-230-IHA can also use armor-piercing or thermobaric warhead variants against different types of targets.

The TRG-230-IHA is an important missile from the point of view of world war doctrines. The principle of operation of the rocket is as follows: after being released from the UAV, it performs a free fall in the air for a certain time. The rocket then autonomously ignites its solid propellant engine.

The TRG-230-IHA pinpoints the target with its GNSS-supported inertial targeting capability that is resistant to jamming systems. The system works with the fire-and-forget function. It offers the user the ability to use it in critical missions without going deep into enemy positions.

According to Turkish sources, the destruction of this missile by the enemy’s classic air defense systems is a difficult task.

Akinci UCAV

The Akinci unmanned combat aerial vehicle [UCAV], developed by Baykar Defense with the experience gained from the Bayraktar Tactical Block-II unmanned aerial vehicle, can perform some of the tasks performed by combat aircraft thanks to its advanced technical capabilities.

With its unique twisted wing structure, AKINCI has a wingspan of 20 meters and many ammunition stations. The attacking drone is able to stay in the air for 24 hours at an altitude of 40,000 feet and carry 1,500 kilograms of payload.

The system, which works with much more advanced payloads such as electronic support capsules, satellite communication systems, air-to-air radar, obstacle detection radar, and synthetic aperture radar, is able to perform air-to-ground and air-to-air missions.

Akinci is constructed to take off and land from the runway. It can fly at a maximum speed of 195 knots and carry a maximum payload of 5,500 kg. It has integrated AESA radar, simultaneous EO / IR / LD, and SIGINT. The drone can be armed with intelligent laser-guided munitions, missiles, and long-range anti-aircraft munitions. Akinci can be powered by either two 750 hp turboprop engines or two 450 hp turboprop engines.
