KYIV, UKRAINE — Tonight, the Defense Forces of Ukraine shot down 24 Shahed kamikaze drones. These are Iranian drones delivered by Tehran to Moscow. Russia has begun to use them heavily in recent months. Targets of Iranian drones are not only military structures but also civilian buildings and populations. The information about the downed 24 drones was provided by the Air Force Command of Ukraine.
“On the night of January 26, the Russian occupiers resumed attacks against Ukraine with Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 kamikaze drones,” the Ukrainian Air Force said. The attack UAVs were launched from the eastern coast of the Sea of Azov.
According to preliminary data, the Russian armed forces used 24 Shaheds. All 24 were destroyed by anti-aircraft missile units, combat aviation, and mobile fire groups of the Air Force in cooperation with air defense units of other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

The majority of the unmanned kamikaze aircraft were reportedly destroyed in the center of the country – in the area of responsibility of the Center Air Command. Updated at 07:15 The Kyiv City Military Administration reported the downing of about 15 Shaheds over Kyiv.
“Kyiv suffered a new air attack by the enemy during the night. About 15 enemy drones were shot down in the airspace. There were no casualties and no infrastructure was hit,” said Mr. Sergey Popko, head of the KMVA.
What precedes this?
On the night of January 26, the anti-aircraft defense forces repelled Russian attacks over Kyiv and Cherkassy regions. An industrial enterprise was damaged in the Dnipropetrovsk region as a result of a night air attack by the Russians.
On the evening of January 25, the head of the office of the President, Mr. Andriy Yermak, announced that the invaders are trying to overwhelm the Ukrainian air defense system and aerial targets are already being shot down over Ukraine.
2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
On 21 February 2022, the Russian government claimed that Ukrainian shelling had destroyed an FSB border facility on the Russia Ukraine border, and claimed that it had killed 5 Ukrainian soldiers who tried to cross into Russian territory. Ukraine denied being involved in both incidents and called them a false flag.
On the same day, the Russian government formally recognized the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR as independent states, according to Putin not only in their de-facto controlled areas, but the Ukrainian regions as a whole, and Putin ordered Russian troops, including tanks, to enter the regions.
On 24 February 2022, Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces previously concentrated along the border. The invasion followed by targeted airstrikes of military buildings in the country, as well as tanks entering via the Belarus border.
Russia has so far not recognized the invasion of Ukraine as a “war”, although that is exactly what it is, claiming that it is a “special military operation”. According to the UN, in which Russia has its permanent representation, for military action to be defined as a “special military operation”, it must have a resolution issued by the UN. There is no such resolution, which automatically defines the military actions of the Russians as an invasion and war against the citizens of Ukraine.
