Even with Leopards, Ukraine cannot defeat Russia – US former Lt. Col.

WASHINGTON, US — The combat power of the Leopard 2 tanks, which the Western countries intend to supply to Ukraine, will not be enough for the country to go to war with Russia, because “wars are won by men, not machines.” This opinion was expressed by retired US Army Lt. Col. Daniel Davis in his article for the US edition of 19FortyFive.

The former US Army Lt. Col. Daniel Davis says that Western partners are discussing the possibility of Ukraine receiving modern tanks. According to Mr. Davis, even if Ukraine gets the modern tanks, the chances of Russia being defeated “aren’t as great as many believe”.

Davis believes there is a misunderstanding of the challenge at the moment. Ukraine, as well as the allies of the Ukrainian president Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky, are “trying to convert the sum total of all military gear into sufficient combat power necessary to drive Putin’s army back to Russia.”

“As it has been since antiquity, wars are waged – and won or lost – by men, not the machines and tools of war,” wrote Daniel Davis in an editorial. The former lieutenant colonel noted that Ukrainian authorities and their Western partners must be fully aware of how much combat power Ukraine needs to repel Russian troops.

Several Western leaders have previously expressed readiness to transfer German Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv. In particular, the Netherlands, Poland, and Estonia intended to provide the Ukrainian side with equipment. However, for this purpose, each of these countries must obtain permission from Germany – the owner of the tank technology.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in turn, said that he does not intend to supply tanks to Ukraine without prior consultations with partners. New York Times columnists believe that Scholz does not want German tanks involved in the conflict with Russia because of Germany’s past.

France

BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that, in addition to the mentioned countries, France is also considering the option of sending Leclerc tanks to Ukraine. A few days ago, Paris announced that Kyiv will receive the AMX-10 anti-tank combat vehicle. In this regard, Sebastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces, made an interesting statement, quoted by the French site Opex360.com.

According to Mr. Lecornu, the French President, Mr. Emmanuel Macron has requested detailed instructions for the transfer of Leclerc tanks to Kyiv. Mr. Macron made this inquiry to the French Ministry of Defense along with a request for instructions on the delivery of the AMX-10 combat vehicles in question.
