Russian Admiral Gorshkov warship crossed the English Channel

MOSCOW, RUSSIA — The frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov”, equipped with hypersonic missiles Zircon, crossed the English Channel to continue long-range tasks in the Atlantic Ocean. This was announced on Thursday, January 12, in the press service of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

According to the military department, since leaving the main base of the Northern Fleet – the city of Severomorsk – the ship has traveled more than 2 thousand nautical miles.

It was previously reported that Admiral Gorshkov warship, accompanied by the medium-sea tanker Kama, is heading to the Mediterranean Sea, where it will lead the Russian Navy’s permanent task force in the region.

The flagship frigate of project 22350 “Admiral Gorshkov” has been in service with the Northern Fleet since the summer of 2018. Since 2020, the ship has been participating in trials of the latest hypersonic anti-ship missile Zircon.

During the first ten days of December 2022, “Admiral Gorshkov” returned to Severomorsk after repairs at the Kronstadt Marine Plant. It was later reported that the frigate would enter service with hypersonic Zircons in January 2023.

The total displacement of the project 22350 frigates is 5400 tons, the length is 135 meters, and the width is 16 meters. The frigate develops a speed of up to 29 knots. Autonomy – 30 days. Cruising range – 4,500 miles. Crew – 170 people.

The standard armament of Project 22350 frigates is high-precision, long-range Kalibr cruise missiles. In addition, the ships are equipped with a 130-mm gun A-192, anti-aircraft missile complex Poliment-Redut, anti-submarine defense Paket, and missile-artillery complexes Broadsword. The Ka-27PL helicopter is based on the board.

According to discovered data, the firing range of the 3M22 Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missile exceeds 1000 km, and the flight speed is indicated in the range of 4 to 6 Mach numbers [4900-7350 km/h]. The Zircon missiles are designed to be launched using the 3C14 universal ship fire systems [UKSK]. These installations enable the use of the entire Kalibr and Onyx family of missiles.
