TOKYO ($1=136.31 Japanese Yens) — Japan will trade its main infantry fighting vehicle to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force [JGSDF]. The Type-96 8×8 will be decommissioned in the coming years. In its place comes the Finnish Patria AMVXP 8×8. The information was officially announced through a press release issued by the Finnish manufacturer Patria.

The Patria AMV is a Finnish modular vehicle that has been in service since 2004. Despite its relatively short life, this infantry vehicle has a combat history. He participated in two wars in the last two decades – War in Afghanistan and the Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen.

According to the customer’s requirements, it can be armed with two types of caliber weapons – 105mm and 120mm. The customer can also choose the power and drivetrain of the vehicle. Patria offers three drive options – the DI 12 Scania Diesel or DC 12 Scania Diesel or DC 13 Scania Diesel engines, which can provide power from 480 horsepower to 600 horsepower.

The Patria AMVXP 8×8 moves at different speeds depending on the surface. On land, the vehicle reaches a maximum speed of 100 km/h, while on the water it “floats” at 10 km/h. With a full tank of fuel, the vehicle travels between 600 and 1,000 km, again depending on the trim level.

The Finnish company says that producing the Patria AMVXP 8×8 under license will ensure the combat capability of the Japanese army. It is also hoped that this product will contribute to the local economy, both in the production of the vehicle and in the supply and repair – for Japan and the region.

Patria recalls that the vehicle has already proven itself in various training and combat missions, most likely referring to the two conflicts mentioned above.

The Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces will receive the most advanced and high-performance AMVXP 8×8 vehicles manufactured in Japan to support critical operations for decades to come,” says Janne Räkköläinen, Senior Vice President of Market Area World at Patria.

The Patria AMVXP 8×8 won the competition for a new JGSDF-wheeled armored personnel carrier. Patria’s arrival in Japan is a chance for both countries to improve their technological know-how. For Patria, the 8×8 wheeled vehicle is a chance to build more lasting relationships in Japan, opening the door to future deals with the Japanese government and defense.
