Russia: Ukraine uses Turkish MLRS, tandem-working with Bayraktar TB2

MOSCOW ($1=60.40 Russian Rubles) — Russian media reports on arms delivery from Turkey to Ukraine. The delivery has not received the necessary media coverage and is only now “coming to light”. It is a Turkish MLRS system that fires TRLG-230 laser-guided missiles. In addition to the Russian state news agency TASS, Oryx also confirmed the news.

Both media outlets refer to a video shared on the Telegram social media by a Ukrainian account. At the moment, there is no exact information on how much Ankara has delivered to Ukraine of these MLRS. However, it is noted that the TRLG-230 missiles, which use laser guidance, can work in tandem with Turkey’s Bayraktar TB2 drones. In this case of cross-operation, the Ukrainian armed forces use the drones to target the target, then the TRLG-230 locks onto the target, pursues it and destroys it.

About TRLG-230 missile

The TRLG-230 was developed and manufactured by the Turkish company Roketsan. It can be fired from various multi-caliber launchers or other platforms with a similar interface. The missile is characterized by pin point accuracy, quick response and low collateral damage. It is intended for any high-priority targets. Roketsan described it as a precision missile that increases the combat capability of artillery military units.

The TRLG-230 has a diameter of 230 mm and weighs 210 kg. The operational range is in a large range: between 20 and 70 km. The guidance system is made up of a complex combination of GPS, GLONASS, Aided INS and LASER SEEKER. The warhead is high explosive [HE] and weighs 42 kg.

Key weapons in Ukraine

The delivery of this type of missile is one of the few weapons with modern technology in it. Western countries that supply weapons to Ukraine still refrain from supplying modern weapons technology. There are, of course, exceptions, such as the Himars MLRS, NASAMS or the Kharm anti-radar missile.

Another country that supplies Ukraine with strong and modern artillery weapons is France and the supply of French self-propelled howitzers Caesar. Germany also decided to deliver a more advanced air defense system than the available Soviet-designed S-200 and S-300, namely the IRIS-T.

Military experts, however, predict the delivery of more weapons to Ukraine, at the same time with increasingly better efficiency and combat capability than those delivered. There is talk of A-10 attack planes, even American F-16 fighter jets. Swedish SAAB Gripens were also “included” in a list of alleged deliveries.

Behind the front line

The delivery of Turkey’s TRLG-230 laser-guided missiles is still key-weapon for Ukraine. The armed forces will be able to attack some targets behind the front lines using the reconnaissance services of Turkey’s Bayraktar drones. The missile is suitable not only for destroying enemy artillery or heavy armored combat vehicles, but also for cover or bunkers. It should be noted that, apart from Turkey and already Ukraine, Bangladesh is the other country operating in the world with this missile.
