MOSCOW ($1=60.59 Russian Rubles) — At the end of this year, Russia will put into operation a small missile ship, Russian media reported, citing RIA Novosti. It is a project 22800 ship known under the name Karakurt. This ship will be the first in the Russian fleet to be armed with the Panzer-M anti-aircraft missile complex. The information about the future acquisition comes from the shipbuilding corporation Ak Bars. Currently, Russia has three projects 22800 missile ships. However, they are armed with an AK-630 anti-aircraft gun mount.

The management of the Russian shipyard hopes that the construction of ships under project 22800 will not stop. They expressed hope that, in addition to the Cyclone, the next ships will also receive the Pantsir-M anti-aircraft missile system. According to Mistakhov, the head of Ak Bars, another ship of the same class is due to be launched in 2023.

Russia has a tradition of converting some of its land-based weapons systems into naval versions. For example, years ago, the Tatarstan ship under project 11661 was armed with the naval version of Uran missiles. A few years later, one of the most famous Russian cruise missiles, the Kalibr, also received its naval equivalent and armed the Dagestan ship.

“Now the first ship with the Pantsir anti-aircraft missile system will appear in the Russian fleet“, said the general director of Ak Bars.

18 more ships

According to the plans of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the company Ak Bars should build a total of five missile ships under project 22800. This ship, which will be acquired by the end of 2022, will be the fourth in a row.

However, other Russian shipyards will have to build another 13 ships of this class. Moscow plans to build a total of 18 ships.

Ships of this class have a displacement of up to 870 tons. They are 67 meters long and 11 meters wide. The ships are powered by three M507D-1 Zvezda diesel engines. The maximum speed of the ships is 30 knots. The crew consists of 39 sailors. The anti-aircraft missile complex Pantsir-M is a 30 mm caliber.
