ANKARA ($1=18.26 Turkish Liras) — Turkey has developed the world’s first unmanned boat capable of waging electronic warfare. Marlin SiDA is a joint product between the Turkish companies Sefine and Aselsan. The boat was developed under the “Platform for armed unmanned marine vehicles” project. In Turkish, the abbreviation is SIDA.
- Ukraine to produce Bayraktar TB2’s fuselages, electronics and software
- Turkish TF-6000 engine will power Kizilelma UCAV up to Mach 2 speed
- Turkey opened the Bosphorus to the Russian ship carrying S-300
The Marlin SiDA is expected to take part in the upcoming NATO exercise in the Black Sea. Ismail Demir, the chairman of the Presidency of the Turkish Defense Industry stated that Turkey is a “pioneer” referring to the appearance of the Marlin SiDA. According to him, Bayraktar drones in all configurations are game-changing weapon systems. Demir expects the latest arms acquisition in the Turkish Navy to do the same.
Sefine and Aselasan
According to available information, the platform was built by the Turkish company Sefine. Electronic warfare systems, however, were developed by another Turkish company, Aselsan. Aselsan is well known in international markets and has been actively developing its activities in electronic warfare assets in recent years. Almost every Turkish missile or weapon system, including air, naval or land-based, capable of waging electronic warfare uses the systems developed by Aselsan.
Turkey expects to begin serial production of the Marlin SiDA soon. Although the boat has passed various tests, meeting the required standards, the upcoming NATO exercise in the Black Sea will decide the fate of this product. Sources say that the Turkish Navy is ready to order the Marlin SiDA, but it will most likely happen in the next fiscal year.
Sefine and Aselsan say they are ready to begin serial production of the Marlin SiDA upon requests from abroad. The two companies will not develop special export versions but will sell the same product with the same characteristics, which will also be used by the Turkish Navy.
The Bayraktar TB2 effect
Recent years and the participation of specific Turkish weapons systems in various conflicts have allowed Turkey to make serious progress in the development of unmanned means. The Bayraktar TB2 attack drone made international media headlines when it successfully countered the Russian Paintsir-S1 mobile air defense systems in Libya and Syria for a short time. Today, Bayraktar TB2 is one of the most sought-after Turkish weapons products in the world.
