WASHINGTON — In early April, General Atomics conducted tests on the Italian Leonardo Seaspray 7500E V2 radar integrated into the MQ-9A Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle. As a result of the tests and after their evaluation, General Atomics decided to equip their MQ-9A Reaper with this radar in the future.

Leonardo Seaspray 7500E V2 is the latest AESA radar of the Italian company. The V2 series has upgraded and updated processor and receiver technology. In this way, the new V2 radar fully meets the changing but growing conditions of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance [ISR] missions.

General Atomics intends to mount the same radar on another member of the MQ-9 Reaper family, namely the MQ-9B SeaGuardian. Robert Schoffling, an employee of General Atomics, was asked by reporters that the company’s remote-controlled aircraft would “add situational awareness” during the mission and that their devices had received “the largest and most capable Seaspray AESA radar” and “proven in operation”.

Future users of the MQ-9A Reaper will get increased range, improved marine detection, and the ability to handle a large number of targets thanks to the new integrated Seaspray 7500E V2 radar.

Key features of the Seaspray 7500E V2

Radar has key benefits that ensure its effectiveness in flight. The radar can work in multi-channel mode at the same time, can intertwine modes, its price is not high, easy to install, and last but not least: open architecture that allows future upgrades.

The radar covers 360-degree continuous scanning. Its maximum range is 320 NM, and its interface is Ethernet, ARINC 429, and 708 with built-in IMU, GPS, and AIS built-in. All this allows him to perform automatic tracking, working in several modes.

Seaspray 7500E V2 is suitable for marine surveillance but has a fully integrated ground map. There is a built-in transport for searching and finding. Separately, it has software for mapping the earth’s surface with high resolution. Performs aerial surveillance and can easily detect and identify a moving target.
