WASHINGTON — The possibility for the UAE to acquire the American super stealth fighter F-35 has not passed and this topic is still on the negotiating table, claims Tactical Report in its analysis. According to the online portal Yousef Al-Otayba, the UAE ambassador to Washington has confirmed that the purchase of the F-35 is still under discussion as part of the defense channels between the United States and the UAE.
- $19B deal: UAE buys 80 of the latest French Dassault Rafale F4 fighters
- China sells 12 supersonic L-15 light combat aircraft to the UAE
- Two UAE military tankers will get low IR signature engine
According to Tactical Report, State Department advisers are urging that strategic defense relations between Washington and Abu Dhabi be maintained to secure US positions in the Middle East. This stability includes the acquisition of fighters.
The first signals that the UAE is considering abandoning the deal with the United States to buy the F-35 came late last year. The UAE government then informed Washington that it was considering abandoning the deal because of “too onerous US demands to protect its high-tech weapons technology from possible Chinese espionage.”
“The UAE has informed the United States that it will suspend negotiations on the purchase of the F-35,” the statement said in December. “Technical requirements, government operational constraints, and cost-benefit analysis have led to a reassessment.”
On January 20, 2021, the United States and the United Arab Emirates signed a $ 23 billion deal to buy 50 F-35 fighters, as well as 18 MQ-9 Reaper drones and modern missiles. BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that this was the last arms deal of the 45th President of the United States Donald Trump, which he signed hours before his predecessor Joe Biden took office.
However, at the end of last year, the UAE did not completely close the door for negotiations with the United States. The emirates commented that Washington was the preferred supplier of weapons technology and that “discussions on the F-35 could resume in the future.” Apparently, this happened, judging by the comment of Tactical Report.
