STOCKHOLM, ($1=9.42 Swedish Kronas) — Peter Hultqvist, Minister of Defense of the Kingdom of Sweden, has announced that his country will provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with AT4 anti-tank weapons, manufactured by the Swedish company SAAB. The information was published in the Swedish online portal Hallands Nyheter, according to which Stockholm will deliver 5,000 units of this weapon.

This is not the first delivery of AT4 from Sweden to Ukraine. In February this year, Sweden also approved 5,000 AT4 units, but the delivery included an additional 135,000 field rations, 5,000 helmets, and 5,000 body shields.

AT4 is perfectly suitable for the conditions of the war in Ukraine, especially in the field of land defense. The Russian army enters the territory of Ukraine with tanks, armored personnel carriers, light armored vehicles, heavily armored combat vehicles, transport trucks, and others.

In recent weeks, social networks have shared videos of the use of AT4 in the conditions of ground battles against the Russian army, and it can be noted that Swedish anti-tank weapons are successfully countering Russian tanks.

AT4 anti-tank weapon

Depending on the model, the anti-tank systems of this family have a striking range of 200 to 1000 meters. It is known that AT4 is a light and comfortable anti-tank system. The soldier fired once with precise aiming and defeat, then threw the cannon. AT4 can operate in enclosed spaces, bunkers, and densely populated urban environments. The Swedes say that AT4 is a completely suitable system for destroying buildings or urban structures, thus creating an access point to them.

The AT4 uses a HEAT charge. High-explosive anti-tank [HEAT] is a type of shaped charge explosive that uses the Munroe effect to penetrate heavy armor. The warhead functions by having an explosive charge collapse a metal liner inside the warhead into a high-velocity superplastic jet; this is capable of penetrating armor steel to a depth of seven or more times the diameter of the charge [charge diameters, CD]. The jet’s effect is purely kinetic in nature; the round has no explosive or incendiary effect on the target.

Because they rely on the chemical energy in the warhead rather than on the kinetic energy of the entire round for their penetration performance, HEAT warheads do not have to be delivered with high velocity, as an armor-piercing round does. Thus they generate less recoil.
