TOKYO, ($1= Japanese Yens) — The Ministry of Defense of Japan announced in a press release that on March 22, 2022, the stealth frigate for multi-missions of the Mogami class – JS Kumano – was put into operation. The frigate is part of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force [JMSDF].

The ship will carry number 2 [FFM-2]. Its construction began in 2019, and on November 20, 2020, it was launched to begin all tests to ensure compliance with the set characteristics and combat capability. JS Kumano was built by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, located in Tomano.
The photo shared by the Ministry of Defense of Japan on the web shows that JS Kumano is designed with a reduced cross-section and minimal vertical surfaces. This design should provide difficult detection of the ship by radar-guided missiles or active radars, ie. low infrared signature.
JS Kumano stealth frigate
JS Kumano is a multi-mission stealth frigate with a length of 133 meters. This is the second ship in a total of eight planned Mogami classes to be built by the end of this decade. This year [in December] JMSDF should acquire another frigate of the same class – JS Noshiro.
JS Kumano is powered by combined diesel and gas [CODAG] type engines. The gas bag is a Rolls-Royce MT30, while the two diesel engines are MAN Diesel V28 / 33DD STC. The entire drive system provides a top speed of 30 knots or 56 km / h.
The warship is equipped with multiple radars and sensors – OPY-2 [X-band multi-purpose AESA radar], OAX-3 [EO / IR], OQQ-25 [VDS + TASS] – ASW, OQQ-11 [Mine- hunting sonar], OYQ-1 [Combat management system], OYX-1-29 [Console display system]. Additionally, there is an integrated electronic warfare system – NOLQ-3E.
The main gun is a 127mm 5 “/ 54 caliber Mark 45 gun, which is a product of the American company BAE Systems. This type of gun and its modifications are manufactured from 1971 to today and continue to be one of the main weapons of ships in the US, the Australian, Spanish, New Zealand, and Turkish fleets.
The ship has a system for the vertical launch of a total of 16 anti-ship missiles Type 12, as well as an integrated launch system for RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile [RAM] surface-to-air missiles. The ship can fire 12 torpedoes, 16 missiles from the second vertical launch system Mk-41, and security in close combat is guaranteed by two remote-controlled weapon systems.
