Argentina is familiar with this type of anti-aircraft system, as it is one of many operators in the world of the older version RBS 70. The overhaul of the latest version RBS 70 NG suggests that the South American country intends to expand the use of RAB systems Saab. In addition to weapons, Argentina is ordering missiles as well as training simulators, which are expected to be used by the three main domains – ground forces, navy, and air force.

What is RBS 70 NG?

RBS 70 NG is a Ground-Based Air Defense [GBAD] system with a short-range – up to 9,000 meters, and to strike at altitudes up to 5,000 meters. The rocket fired by the RBS 70 NG flies at a maximum speed of Mach 2. RBS 70 NG deploys extremely fast – in just 30 seconds, and the recharge time is reduced to 5 seconds.

RBS 70 NG is equipped with laser guidance and night sight, which according to the Swedes is specially designed for this system, which gives it more flexibility and modularity. Additionally, there is an integrated high-resolution thermal imaging sight.

RBS 70 NG can automatically track a target. Charge breakthrough power is also increased, and improved targeting supports the further performance of the entire system. RBS 70 NG can track targets in two ways – manually and automatically. The system also makes high-definition videos.

The most modern ground-based air defense

Saab says the RBS 70 NG is the world’s most advanced short-range weapon system. According to Gjorgen Johansson, head of the Saab Dynamics business zone, the acquisition of this system by Argentina will significantly improve the country’s air defense.

“We look forward to further strengthening the air defense of the Argentine Armed Forces. With this capability, they will have the most modern short-range air defense system on the market, with unjammable laser guidance as well as an integrated night sight,” says Johansson.

RBS 70 NG is already used in the Czech Republic, Brazil, and Sweden. For those unfamiliar with the acronym, RBS is Swedish for missile system [robotsystem], and at an early stage of laser guidance development, a remotely controlled car was used to simulate the missile.
