BUDAPEST, ($1=309.04 Hungarian Forint) – Hungary and Sweden have successfully concluded negotiations for upgrading the Hungarian Gripen C / D fleet to the MS20 Block 2 standard, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing FlugRevue.
- Hungary bought a NASAMS system and expects the delivery until 2023
- Hungary bought two Brazilian military Embraer C-390 Millennium air tankers
- Hungarian Air Force Purchases 180 Air-to-Air Missiles from the US
- Top 5 fastest active fighter jets in the world
The new standard, according to Saab, increases the combat and communication skills of the Gripen C / D and provides access to a wide range of weapons.
Sensor capability will be improved with a radar upgrade to the PS-05 / A Mk 4, which means air-to-air target tracking range, as well as other features, will be vastly improved. Features include better small airborne target detection and improved clutter suppression. In addition, there is now growth potential for further developments in air-to-air and air-to-ground modes.
The MS20 Block 2 upgrade for the Hungarian Gripen fleet also includes the improvement of the Link16 functionality [NATO Datalink] and the update of the voice communication to the latest secure NATO communication standard. The ability to identify coalition aircraft is enhanced with the introduction of the latest NATO Mode 5 of the IFF system.
As for the weapons, the IRIS-T, GBU-49, and Meteor can now be used.
“With the changes introduced by upgrading the MS20 Block 2, Hungary will have an even more efficient and powerful aircraft that can compete in every respect with other next-generation combat aircraft,” said Jonas Hjelm, head of Saab’s Aeronautics division.
The Hungarian state leases the JAS 39 Gripen from Sweden. The aircraft will become Hungarian property in 2026. The contract for the armament is therefore given to Saab by the Swedish Armaments Office FMV.
