WASHINGTON – The global arms industry, both military and civilian, will be $ 7.2 billion higher in 2029. In the last fiscal year [2020], the sector added $ 8.3 billion in business and is expected ten years later, in 2029 will reach $15.5 million, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing InfoDefensa. This is 86.7% more, the result of growth in the international market, which includes materials used for ballistic protection of land, naval, and air platforms.

The US market research provider Market Forecast has published a 182-page report entitled Armored Materials – Market and Technology Forecast to 2029, which reviews some of the current keys to the business. The work points to the change that equipment manufacturers are leading “to lighter and non-metallic elements with strong tactical capabilities to participate in the armored materials market,” according to its editor.

The materials used to protect ground combat vehicles mainly consist of two main types of armor: the so-called jet and passive. The reagents use explosives between two metal plates that detonate when a projectile strikes so that it is destroyed before entering the vehicle. In the case of liabilities, these are laminated materials with high resistance.

Metals and alloys are the most widely used materials in this sector, especially titanium, which is widely used for shielding due to its high hardness combined with its low weight. Today, with the rise of science around material engineering, other components such as ceramics and fiberglass are gaining considerable weight among the armor. The Market Forecast report estimates that the fastest-growing segment during the forecast period will be ceramic materials, which will lead to expected annual growth of 10.32% by 2029.

Active protection systems

On the other hand, the market for security systems is mainly driven by the development of unshielded solutions, which are expected to add to the tactical capabilities of the vehicle. The development of so-called active protection systems is assessed as one of the key challenges for this sector. The use of this technology allows reducing the weight of vehicles by increasing their protection, thus improving their capabilities against incoming projectiles.

By region, North America accounts for 37% of this market, followed by the Asia-Pacific region. Europe, on the other hand, is 19% ahead of the Middle East, where demand for armor is expected to equip new vehicles with which its governments will try to fight “growing riots and geopolitical tensions” in the region.
