BERLIN, ($1=0.88 Euros) – MBDA Deutschland has announced that it has concluded an agreement with the Israeli IAI, aimed at cooperation in the field of air defense systems, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing Defence24. This could be an introduction to offering IAI solutions in the new Bundeswehr air defense program.

In a short press release, we read that the agreement is the basis for the cooperation of both companies in the field of ground air defense. To this end, both companies are to look for opportunities to create joint solutions, while using the advantages of the systems they offer.

It is emphasized that this is to be a response to the increasing challenges faced by modern air defense systems, which should cooperate for this purpose.

Guy Bar-Lev, Executive VP and General Manager of the Systems, Missiles, and Space Group stressed that he was convinced that cooperation with MBDA Deutschland would make a significant contribution to the Bundeswehr’s ability to meet current and future threats. This means that both companies will offer their products to, among others, the German armed forces.

At the same time, it is no secret that the Bundeswehr is currently looking for new air defense systems, especially in the short and very short range [NNBS program]. While the mid-range capabilities are provided by the modernized Patriots at least for the time being, and the program of the TLVS system replacing them has been postponed, ground defense in the short-range layer does not exist at all, and only a dozen aging sets are responsible for the very short-range segment. Ozelot is a residual ability.

At the same time, Germany is becoming more and more aware of the threats that may appear on the modern battlefield and require the reaction of short-range and very short-range systems. the course of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The industry has already presented its offer many times in response to the army’s demand. In the case of MBDA, these were, inter alia, Mistral missile launchers.

Rheinmetall, in turn, developed a rocket and artillery system with a 30 mm KCA cannon. In addition, Rheinmetall Electronics, together with Hensoldt [producer of radar and electronic systems] and Diehl Defense, which offers the IRIS-T SL and SLS missiles, established the ARGE working group in the first half of the year, aimed at cooperation in the field of air defense.

The MBDA Deutschland announcement does not mention specific systems, but IAI may bring its Barak-MX modular anti-aircraft system to the German market, with effectors with a range of 35, 70, and 150 km [some of them also can fight ballistic targets], but also radars, including those used in the Iron Dome system, and command systems.

The IAI is already present on the German market because in cooperation with Hensoldt, it provides radar equipment for the modernization of the Type 124 frigates and for the HADR program of ground defense stations [both ships and the new Luftwaffe land radars will be able to detect ballistic targets].

Another Israeli company, Rafael, in cooperation with German companies, supplies the Spike-LR / LR2 anti-tank missiles, locally known as MELLS, and has recently also received an order for an active Trophy protection system for Leopard 2A7A1 tanks.

There are therefore many indications that the short-range and very short-range air defense, which Germany intends to rebuild in the coming years, will also be an opportunity for Israeli industry. Final decisions in this regard, however, have to be made, and contracts will probably be submitted by various companies. One thing is certain – without recreating the potential in this area, lost in the years after the end of the Cold War, Germany will not achieve an adequate level of allied credibility within NATO.
