“As inter-Korean communication channels are restored and operational, I believe we are at a time when inter-Korean and North-US relations need to be checked and joint consultations held,” Su Hong told South Korea’s Renhap news agency.
He noted that he intends to discuss with the American side the issue of declaring the end of the Korean War. Su Hong also plans to discuss with the United States the issue of easing sanctions against the DPRK. “If negotiations on the nuclear program continue, the issue of easing sanctions will, in any case, be discussed together,” he said.
Su Hong is expected to meet with her American counterpart Jake Sullivan in Washington on Tuesday. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, South Korean President Moon Jae-in called for efforts to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War.
According to him, declaring the official end of the Korean War will help advance the process of denuclearization of the DPRK. “When the countries of the Korean War unite and declare the end of the war, I believe we can make irreversible progress towards denuclearization and an era of complete peace,” the South Korean president said.
For his part, U.S. Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said the United States is open to discussing the possibility of officially declaring an end to the Korean War.
“We continue to strive to work with the DPRK to resolve various issues and we are open to discussing the possibility of declaring an end to the war,” Kirby told a news conference.
“The United States remains committed to achieving lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy with North Korea,” he added.
Earlier, Kim Jong-un, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Pyongyang could declare an official end to the Korean War and was ready to discuss holding an inter-Korean summit if South Korea treated the DPRK with justice and mutual respect.
