BERLIN, ($1=0.86 Euroes) – This summer, the German army, the Bundeswehr, left Afghanistan 20 years later. It has now been revealed that more than 17.3 billion euros have been spent on the entire mission, with the most spent on the army, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing Defense24.

The Bundeswehr was stationed in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021. For its participation during those years in the operations of the International Security Assistance Force [ISAF], Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Decisive Support Mission in Afghanistan, the Federal Ministry of Defense a total of about 12.3 billion euros in “additional operating costs”, according to a response from the federal government at the request of the FDP parliamentary group, the dpa news agency reported on Tuesday.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has spent approximately 2.48 billion euros on so-called staff and material costs. This amount does not include the staff and operational costs of the Foreign Office, which were incurred in the course of normal diplomatic activities in any case. Over the past 20 years, the Ministry of Development has transferred approximately 2.46 billion euros to Afghanistan. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture has spent 33m euros in Afghanistan over two decades.

Information on the expenses of the Federal Intelligence Service [BND] in Afghanistan is classified, writes dpa. “Disclosure of the relevant information would seriously impede the performance of the tasks of the Federal Intelligence Service, which in turn could jeopardize the security of the Federal Republic of Germany or cause serious damage to its interests,” the federal government said. The federal government also classifies as classified information which infrastructure, built with German money, is currently used by the Taliban.

After the withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan, the radical Islamic Taliban soon took over the country. In August, German troops took part in evacuation flights, rescuing thousands of Afghans. The cost of this mission is estimated at over 40 million euros.
