Turkish UAVs have changed the rules of the game, Akinci is next

ANKARA, ($1= 8.36 Turkish Liras) – The new Akinci strike drone complex, developed by Baykar Defense, was ceremoniously introduced into the Turkish Armed Forces on August 29, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Defense Express.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and the State Agency for Defense Industry personally arrived to hand over the first UAV to the armed forces. Among the guests were leaders of Ukrainian companies who helped Turkey implement this ambitious project.

The Akinci UAV project is a matter of special pride for the Turkish developer and manufacturer Baykar Defense, which has covered the entire distance from the start of work to the start of serial production in less than two years.

This was facilitated by the experience gained in the development of previous models, including the world-famous Bayraktar TB2 reconnaissance and strike unmanned aerial vehicle.

So at the ceremony of accepting the Akinci UAV into the Turkish army, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan rightly noted that “Turkish drones have changed the rules of the game in the theater of operations. And this is due to the hard work of our engineers. Today we see a new result”.

Thanks to this project, the Republic of Turkey has become one of the few countries with technologies for the production of drones of this class.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan also noted the role of Ukraine – including as one of the starting buyers for Bayraktar TB2. Today, these UAVs are supplied to ten countries.

Next in line, according to the President of Turkey, Baykar Defense is implementing an ambitious project to develop an already unmanned strike fighter, “I am sure that it will be implemented promptly and will be another pride of Turkey.”

The President of Turkey congratulated on receiving a new model of unmanned weapons 125 servicemen – from sergeants to officers who have undergone training courses for the use of BPAC Akincii and who were also present at the celebrations.

The importance of Baykar Defense’s successful projects for Turkey’s ability to expand and expand the country’s competencies and capabilities was also noted by the Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar and the Head of the State Agency for Defense Industry of the Republic of Turkey Ismail Demir.

According to Baykar Defense CTO Selcuk Bayraktar, the new Akinci drones will significantly increase the Turkish military’s ability to reliably protect airspace.

What Akinci UAV is?

Akıncı [Turkish – type of light cavalry] is a new generation strike unmanned aerial vehicle and one of the first projects of the Ukrainian-Turkish joint venture “Black Sea Shield”.

The main purpose of Akıncı is to conduct operational and strategic air reconnaissance, as well as airstrikes on enemy targets.

The wingspan of Akıncı is 20 meters and the length of the fuselage is 12.3 meters. The maximum takeoff weight of the drone is 5500 kg. It is equipped with surveillance systems: from thermal imagers and powerful cameras, radars with an active phased array antenna and various sensors.

The first test flight of the prototype of the new Akıncı strike drone took place on December 6, 2019, the aircraft was equipped with Ukrainian AI-450T engines developed by Ivchenko-Progress. This Ukrainian company in the period from 2018 to the first quarter of 2020 exported to Turkey at least 12 of these engines. Akinci can be fitted with one of three types of turboprop engines with 225, 450, and 750 hp. It is expected that Baykar will continue to use Ukrainian-made power plants for the mass production of Akinci.

Akıncı can stay in the air for up to 24 hours. The maximum flight altitude is 12 km, range 250 km [when using SATCOM – unlimited]. The flight speed of the drone is 463 km / h. Payload weight – 1350 kg [450 internal and 900 – hinged load].

The Akinci drone can be armed with 24 MAM-L bombs or other air bombs [Mk81, Mk82, Mk83], it can also carry various surface-to-surface missiles [SOM, Gökdoğan, Bozdoğan], KGK-82, Teber-81 bombs, LGK-82, as well as Cirit missiles.

To properly perform its strike functions, Akıncı is equipped with an autonomous control system that can aim the drone at the target and return it to the base without human intervention. It is also equipped with a built-in electronic warfare system.
