The handover ceremony took place in mid-August and was attended by representatives of the Turkish Embassy and the leadership of the Somali Armed Forces. For Ankara, the supply of wheeled armored vehicles is becoming a self-sufficient tool of geopolitical expansion
It is planned that the Somali military will use the equipment to fight militants of the al-Shabaab group. In August 2020, Turkey also donated military equipment to Somalia – 12 MRAP Kirpi class armored vehicles and 12 Mitsubishi Triton pickups, which were equipped with machine gun mounts.
Turkey has a very specific interest in transferring military vehicles to Somalia free of charge: Ankara seeks to gain geopolitical leadership in the Horn of Africa and prevent its rivals from Saudi Arabia and the UAE from influencing it.
After all, Somalia is also not the first country to which Turkey transfers military equipment to achieve geopolitical goals. Kosovo should receive from Turkey 14 MRAP armored vehicles – four Vuran vehicles and 10 Kirpi vehicles manufactured by BMC. Transmission timing – the first two cars from this party should arrive in 2022, and this will be one of the elements of building full-fledged security forces in Kosovo with the support of Turkey.
