US will support Ukraine in the event of ‘Russian aggression’
On April 2 this year, the US and Ukrainian defense ministers Lloyd Austin and Andriy Taran discussed the situation in Donbas. The US minister assured his Ukrainian counterpart of his readiness to support Kyiv in an “escalation of Russian aggression.” The Ukrainian defense ministry website published this statement on its website on Thursday.
“Lloyd Austin expressed concern over the Russian Federation’s recent actions and conveyed to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine his assurances of his readiness to support Ukraine in the face of the ongoing Russian aggression in Donbas and Crimea. Realization of aggressive aspirations of the Russian Federation in Ukraine” said in a statement.
Taran informed the interlocutor about the military-political situation along the demarcation line with the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which are not under the control of Kyiv and in Crimea and around the state border of Ukraine.
He paid particular attention to the March 26 events near the village of Shumi, where four Ukrainian servicemen were killed. “Also, the head of the Ukrainian Department of Defense noted the systematic escalation of the security situation in the area of the Joint Forces operation and the reluctance of the Russian Federation to reaffirm its adherence to the ceasefire,” the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
We need missiles to hit Russia’s nuclear power plants
Despite the partial withdrawal of Russian troops and weapons from the Russian-Ukrainian border, the political situation and the wrong tone between the two countries continue to dominate the exchange of remarks.
On April 28 this year, the Ukrainian MP from the Voice faction in the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, Roman Kostenko, made a statement that was not a proposal for speeches and diplomacy but war.
“The Russian Federation has one of the most powerful armies globally and one of the most significant nuclear capabilities in the world. We need to have something to oppose it. Now we need missiles – missiles with a range of at least a thousand kilometers, which we can have in operation and threaten the Russian Federation preventively,” he said.
It would have been a typical political statement if Kostenko had not gone further in his intentions and linked the production of these missiles to their use in Russia’s nuclear power plants.
“We need to have such missiles, even without nuclear warheads, and Russia needs to know that they have nuclear power plants like we had Chernobyl and that our missiles will fly there. Then we can conduct our diplomacy with the Russian Federation,” said Kostenko.
Kostenko said that the idea is about to be realized as there are currently negotiations with various Ukrainian companies to start such production. However, the Ukrainian MP made a critical remark – Ukraine cannot produce them because both money and will are needed among the politicians, he said.
