PANAGYURISHTE, ($1= 1.66 Bulgarian Levs) – The People’s Liberation Army of China conducted a series of exercises of its amphibious forces, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Defense Express. These exercises are the reason some western analysts believe that China could use several thousand civilian ships for various purposes to attack Taiwan.
- In the shadow of Afghanistan: China is training near Taiwan
- Taiwan should not expect US military support in a conflict with China
- Chinese bombers activated Taiwan’s air defenses in full combat readiness
The novelty of these maneuvers is that for the first time a large civilian ferry was used to land the landing party, which is formally owned by the civilian shipping company Bohai Ferry Group, says the Naval Post portal.
In this case, we are talking about the ferry Bohai Pearl, which has a displacement of 24 thousand tons, a hull length of 164 meters, and a width of 25 meters, and on its three decks can carry more than 300 units of equipment.
This ro-ro ferry was tasked with delivering the unit on ZTD-05 amphibious vehicles to the landing site. There are no other details about these maneuvers, so for example it is unknown whether the Bohai Pearl ferry landed or swam on a specially equipped coast.
But here it is worth noting the following. Until now, Western analysts have noted that the Chinese are building their civilian rollerbladers for a “dual” purpose, in particular, to use such ships as landing during possible aggression against Taiwan.
This was indicated in particular by the fact that some Chinese ferries are equipped with additional ramps for more convenient unloading of military equipment.
In 2020, the same ZTD-05 unloaded “experimentally” from the ramp of one of the civilian ferries of the Chinese fleet. Now the first full-fledged involvement of a large civilian ferry during the maneuvers of the amphibious forces took place.
In theory, China has several thousand civilian ships that could be involved to secure a landing in Taiwan. But for such a threat to become a reality, Beijing must solve another problem of a practical nature – the technology of disembarking troops from civilian ships, which can operate only based on full-fledged port infrastructure.
The way out is that the Chinese will master the design and manufacture of “artificial berths” modeled on how similar designs were used by the Allies during the 1944 Normandy landings.
