TAIPEI, BM, ($1=27.76 Taiwan New Dollars) – The US Department of Defense reported that Washington approved the sale of 40 units of 155-mm M109A6 self-propelled howitzer artillery systems worth $750 million to Taiwan, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing DSCA.
- Taiwan should not expect US military support in a conflict with China
- Chinese bombers activated Taiwan’s air defenses in full combat readiness
- Taiwan is arming itself and the local industry is helping, and the US too
The package will include the howitzers themselves, one Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System, five M88A2 Hercules vehicles, and five M2 Chrysler Mount .50 caliber machine guns; and one thousand six hundred ninety-eight (1,698) multi-option, Precision Guidance Kits (PGK). The deal between Taiwan and the United States also includes repair and maintenance of obsolete self-propelled howitzers of the same model, several global navigation systems, electro-optical night vision devices, training and maintenance of ordered military equipment. The Pentagon already notified Congress on Wednesday of a possible sale.
Taiwan’s military department on Thursday expressed “sincere gratitude” to the United States, saying it would help increase “the ability of its ground forces to respond quickly and provide fire support” and that US arms supplies are “the basis for maintaining regional stability.”
The US State Department confirms that with this sale it hopes to stabilize and increase Taiwan’s artillery efficiency, but also that the deal serves US national and economic interests as well as ensuring American security.
The Taiwanese government expects to begin direct talks with manufacturers and major contractors on the massive deal soon. As noted in a press release issued by the DSCA, such negotiations will be necessary because the entire contract does not define a single contractor. And there are several: BAE Systems, Anniston, AL and Elgin, OK; M992A2 FAASV, Aniston Army Depot (ANAD), Bynum, AL; and recovery vehicles M88A2, BAE, York, Pennsylvania.
China has consistently resolutely opposed the sale of foreign weapons to Taiwan, stressing that this seriously violates the principle of one China, is a gross interference in China’s internal affairs, a violation of its sovereignty and security interests.
