AUSTRIA, BM, ($1=0.84 Euros) – 50 army athletes compete for Austria at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Austrian Armed Forces provide almost 70 percent of all athletes who fight for medals under the red-white-red flag in Tokyo. The Olympic team gathered today in the Rossau barracks and was bid farewell by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

Proud of athletes
“Today I would like to wish all the best not only to my army athletes but to everyone who will fly to Tokyo to fight for medals for their home country! I am convinced that all of Austria will cheer for you and keep your fingers crossed. Be She assures us that we are incredibly proud of you,” the minister congratulated the athletes.
The Austrian Armed Forces send its athletes to the disciplines of canoeing, athletics, sport climbing, triathlon, rowing, sailing, gymnastics, table tennis, shooting, cycling, judo, swimming, weightlifting, badminton, karate, horse riding, and modern pentathlon. With train leader Tanja Frank and train leader Thomas Zajac, the only 2016 Olympic medal winners in Austria are in the squad. They were able to secure the bronze medal in sailing in Rio.

Military sports traditionally provide numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, European and World Championships.
