No AR-15 assault rifles on the streets of California for now

LOS ANGELES, BM – California is one of the states with the lowest firearms mortality rates. One reason, analysts say, is the lack of AR-15 assault rifles on state streets. California does not yet allow this type of firearm to be freely distributed and used by the civilian population.

However, this may change soon. We remind you that earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez decided to lift this 30-year ban. In his decision, his motives were that it was unconstitutional and compared this type of firearm to a “safe Swiss Army knife”.

A response from authorities and an appeals court of the 9th U.S. District Court has now adjourned pending an appeal. Whether the carrying of assault rifles will soon be allowed in California or whether the ban will remain depends on “decisions in other gun cases that are now in court,” the Los Angeles Times notes.

The decision of the 9th District Court of the United States to block that of District Judge Roger Benitez was welcomed by Governor Gavin Newsum (D) and Attorney General Rob Bonta. According to Bonta, the ban on the possession and carrying of AR-15 assault rifles works and is evidenced by the low mortality rates caused by firearms.

He also tweeted: “The 9th Circuit granted our motion to stay the district court’s ruling in Miller v. Bonta. This leaves our assault weapons laws in effect while appellate proceedings continue. We won’t stop defending these life-saving laws.”

We remind you that only a few days ago the ban on the permission to carry public firearms in the state of Texas was lifted.

In Texas, things are different

International news agencies report that the state of Texas in the United States is lifting restrictions on the carrying of firearms in public. The bill was signed by Governor Greg Abbott on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, under number HB1927. The governor is expected to make a public signing of the law at an official ceremony this morning.

According to the texts of HB1927, since the First Amendment permits the possession and carrying of a weapon, Texas citizens should not be restricted from carrying guns in public. The bill was drafted, presented, and passed in May in the US Senate and the House of Representatives by the votes of Republicans who dominate the US Senate.

“This is something that 20 other states have adopted and it’s time for Texas to adopt it, too,” Abbott told local talk radio station WBAP in April.

As expected, the law on removing barriers to carrying firearms in Texas met with resistance from Democrats. According to them, more violence is imminent with the fall of permits. As an example, they cited several mass public shootings in Austin this month, as well as the famous mass shooting at Walmart in El Paso in 2019, where 23 were killed and 23 were injured.

“Despite overwhelming support for gun violence prevention legislation, Republicans, led by a cowardly governor, are more interested in groveling for the gun lobby’s attention than they are in preventing gun violence and honoring victims and survivors in El Paso and across Texas,” US Representative from Texas Veronica Escobar said in a tweet.

The bill was passed at a time when Texas was not overtaken by another mass shooting. In the United States, personal gunfight continues for years. There is hardly a week in which regional or national news reports that there has been a shootout in one of the 50 US states in which civilians have been killed.

One of the most influential lobbies in the United States and the world is the weapons. A report shows that there is an increase in the sale of firearms among US citizens.
