PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Syria received dozens of fighter jets from the Russian Federation last year. They are model MiG-29 SMT. We know about the Russian fighter’s combat capabilities from this model, but the SMT version differs significantly.

Military analysts have noted that with the arrival of the MiG-29SMT in Syria, foreign aircraft have stopped entering Syrian airspace. Israel, for example, has cut off helicopters and fighter jets from fighting in the Golan Heights. Tel Aviv’s last few attacks on Damascus have been carried out by Israeli F-16s but from Lebanese airspace.

According to others, Syria currently has one of the best fighters in the Middle East. The only fighter in front of it in this ranking is the Israeli version of the stealth fighter F-35, which we know is even more dangerous than the American F-35.

There are rumors among the Russian authorities in the Kremlin that Syria is preparing to buy a MiG-35, further increasing the country’s air defense capabilities. But why is the MiG-29SMT so good, and how does it differ from the famous MiG-29?

Engine and armament

The MiG-29SMT was designed at the end of the last century. His first flight was in 1998 with a prototype. The fighter was officially introduced in 2004 when its serial production began.

Two RD-33 engines of series-3 drive the Russian machine. Each of the motors provides a thrust of 8,300 kgf. Depending on the flight altitude, MiG-29SMT has a different flight speed. If the fighter is at a low height, it moves at a maximum of 1500 km / h. At high altitudes, its rate reaches 2400 km / h.

The MiG-29 reaches 9G, develops a speed of Mach 2.25, and with three full tanks and one charge, can fly 5,000 km. The maximum flight altitude is 17.5 km.

The Russian fighter is arming with 14 air-to-air missiles (two with a long-range range, six with a medium-range, and six with a short-range). It carries an additional four guided bombs, eight air-to-ground missiles, two anti-ship, two anti-radar missiles, and a 30 mm machine gun.
