ANKARA, (BM) – Since Erdogan bought S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia, he has repeatedly threatened to activate them on various occasions. Today it became clear, based on official documents quoted by various Turkish media, that the Turkish administration is ready to start testing the Russian systems purchased in mid-October at the Gray Sinop missile range, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
We remind you that it was the Russian systems that quarreled with the United States and Turkey, and Washington was forced to immediately expel Ankara from the program for the development and sale of fifth-generation F-35 fighters.
What some Turkish agencies are spreading is that Turkey will launch air targets that are to be intercepted by the S-400, and the entire testing procedure is expected to take place between October 5th and 16th this year.
“Tests for S-400 firearms will be launched at the Sinop missile range between 05-16 October 2020 to ensure the ability to intercept the S-400 armed system, the ability to detect and monitor the system’s radar, the capabilities of the communication system and the control of the capabilities for firing and control of commands “, the document says.
Ankara is aware and apparently resigned to the fact that if it officially activates the Russian S-400 system, sanctions under Washington under the CAATSA law will immediately follow. We have repeatedly reported that US diplomats and senators have warned the Turkish administration not to activate the system, otherwise sanctions will follow. It was Ankara’s passivity on the issue so far that prevented Washington from starting the procedure.
There is even a question of whether it is possible for Turkey not to activate the Russian system, but to resell it to its American NATO partners, but this possibility is constantly rejected, as it will anger Russia, and lawsuits will follow, which in no way exist. to be won by Turkey. Such a move would only anger Putin and he, in turn, would impose harsh sanctions on the Turkish administration, given that the two countries are partnering on several gas energy projects.
We know that Washington would not want Turkish systems to be activated for several reasons, but especially the ability of the Russian missile system to collect data on the secrets of the F-35 or F-22 stealth fighter, which is unacceptable to the Pentagon. We have repeatedly mentioned that even activated in Turkey, the system can easily obtain the “secrets” of the fighters used by the Israeli air force, and we know that the Israeli F-35 has even better characteristics than the American fighters.
It is not yet clear and there is no official response from Washington on what will happen if Ankara performs the tests on those dates, because that means a period of 10 days during which the system will be activated. To protect its technology, Israeli and US fifth-generation fighter jets are likely to be grounded, while Washington will launch the sanctions activation process.
This will definitely be a severe blow to Erdogan and his neo-Ottoman plans, as Turkey is currently not enjoying economic calm, on the contrary – the country is in a financial crisis and new sanctions would worsen both the Turkish economy and Erdogan’s image. every passing day loses.
We remind you that despite the real threat of even greater economic consequences for the country, the Turkish army signed a new contract with Moscow for the supply of more bards from the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system, only nearly a month and a half ago. It is unofficially said that Ankara is even ready to co-produce these systems with Moscow, which is a kind of response to Erdogan that he would not tolerate foreign interference in the country’s affairs.
Turkey promises allies to protect secrets of S-400 defense system and F-35 fighter
Turkey promises to protect the secret data of the Russian C-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from leakage as well as the data of the fifth-generation F-35 American fighter, the head of the Turkish Defense Industry Directorate Ismail Demir said on July 17 this year.
In response to US concerns about the S-400, Ismail Demir said: “Turkey will launch the S-400 alone to protect the F-35 program and its weapons systems.”
He also said that Turkey promises Russia to protect data from S-400 systems, the newspaper said. “Russia has expressed concern about the S-400 data, and Turkey promises to protect these systems.”
Why S-400 and F-35 are incompatible?
If Turkey acquired the S-400 alongside the F-35, the technology that makes that aircraft lethal could potentially be compromised. This opinion was expressed by hundreds of experts last year, including us.
NATO states use a tactical data link that allows military aircraft and even ships and ground troops to share their tactical pictures in near-real time. This is called Link 16. NATO aircraft also use Identification Friend or Foe systems, known as IFF, to identify friendly aircraft in the sky.
An IFF and Link 16 interrogator would have to be integrated into the S-400 system to allow the Turkish F-35, with the transponder, to fly within lethal range of the S-400.
This opens up all Link 16 and IFF tactical data link equipment to be compromised, a former radar and weapons expert said on background.
“With the F-35 flying in close proximity to the S-400 system, over time, you could collect sensitive stealth characteristics of this F-35 and learn its detailed stealth capabilities,” the expert said.
