TEL AVIV, (BM) – The Israeli army carried out new bombing of Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip in response to the launch of incendiary balloons, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing AFP.

“Fighters, military helicopters and tanks target Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip,” including “Hamas’s naval defense system, underground infrastructure and observation posts,” the army said in a statement.

A pregnant woman and a three-year-old child were injured in the shelling, the Palestinian Red Crescent said.

Let us recall that these strikes were struck the day after the announcement of an agreement on the normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, which was criticized by the Palestinians.

Over the past week, the Israel Defense Forces have claimed responsibility for a series of overnight attacks on Hamas positions in response to balloon fire that led to wildfires in the south of the country. On August 10, Israel closed the Kerem Shalom border crossing, through which supplies to Gaza take place.

Recall that 2 million people live in Gaza, more than half of whom, according to the World Bank, live below the poverty line.

In June, Israel launched a large-scale attack in the Gaza Strip.

As we reported in the end of June, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched a big assault over the Gaza Strip, hitting several areas, including Khan Younis.

According to Palestinian activists, the Israeli Defense Forces primarily used heavy artillery and airstrikes to hammer the southern part of the Gaza Strip, with the main focus being the Khan Younis region.

Furthermore, local media said that an Israeli warplane bombed east of the city of Deir al-Balah, without causing any injuries or damage to the place.

Israeli artillery bombarded another site with two rocket-propelled grenades east of Gaza City, where it was found that the shelling targeted a monitoring post of Hamas.

In a related context, the Israeli Iron Dome system monitored Friday evening the launch of two rockets from the Gaza Strip towards Israel.

Israeli Channel 13 reported that “the two rockets landed, one in an uninhabited area on the Israeli side of the border, while the other landed inside the strip.”

This latest incident comes at a time of heightened tensions between the Palestinian leadership and Israeli authorities over the possible annexation of the West Bank.

Background

On January 28, US President Donald Trump published the text of a plan to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, calling it the “deal of the century.” According to the plan, the state of Palestine is being created within the boundaries substantially smaller than those proposed by the UN in 1947.

Under the new US plan, the capital of Palestine is located in east Jerusalem. Trump’s proposal provoked a sharp reaction in the Arab world. The head of the State Duma’s committee on international affairs announced the futility of the “deal of the century”, especially since her presentation was held without representatives of Palestine.

Trump’s proposed “deal of the century” actually repeats the main points of the 2004 UN resolution on “two states,” but with important nuances that infringe on the rights of Palestinians and in reality recognize the status quo advantageous to Israel.

The mere proposal to take the Palestinian capital beyond the borders of Old Jerusalem, far from Islamic shrines, to the Arab neighborhoods of Kafr Aqab and Shuafat, to the refugee camp now located behind the “security fence”, was perceived by the Arab world as a sophisticated mockery.

The Arabs do not even discuss the remaining points of the proposed “peace agreement”: the main and almost the only thesis sounds: “we are offered to sell our shrines and decades of struggle for freedom for $ 50 billion.” Judging by the statement of the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and the reactions of the Arab press, the “deal of the century” did not bring peace prospects in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but very seriously removed it.
