According to the channel, five Iraqi border guards, including two officers, and ten members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were among the dead. Five civilians are said to have suffered as a result of the incident.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sky News Arabia reported five dead. According to him, a Turkish drone mistakenly attacked a convoy of Iraqi border guards northeast of Erbil.

The Iraqi presidency condemned the Turkish drone attack, which targeted an Iraqi border guard force in the northern Kurdistan region, and considered it a “blatant attack” and a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

A statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic in Iraq said: “We condemn the blatant attack carried out by Turkey through a plane that targeted Sayyid Kan in the Kurdistan region.”

The statement continued: “The repeated Turkish military breaches of Iraqi lands are a serious violation of the sovereignty of Iraq and a clear violation of international laws and charters and good neighborly relations, and we condemn these aggressive acts that resulted in the martyrdom of a number of innocent citizens in addition to the heroic border guard officers.”

They added: “We call for the immediate cessation of these attacks, and sitting at the table of dialogue and understanding to solve the border problems between the two neighboring countries by peaceful means and methods in a manner that preserves the security and stability of the region.”

The Turkish Armed Forces periodically inflict pinpoint strikes on PKK targets in northern Iraq, where the organization has camps, shelters, command posts and weapons depots. The military is sanctioned for such cross-border operations by the parliament, which over the past eight years has extended the corresponding mandate for a year.

Ankara considers the PKK a terrorist organization and one of the main threats to national security. The Iraqi leadership, in turn, condemns violations of the borders of the Iraqi airspace by the Turkish Armed Forces, calling Ankara’s actions a violation of the sovereignty of the Iraqi state.

Months ago, Turkey launched a military operation in Iraq

As we reported on June 22 this year, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced the deployment of additional forces to Iraq as part of “Operation Tiger Claw”, which is targeting the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The ministry said then in a statement issued yesterday evening that additional commando units were deployed to new locations in northern Iraq after carrying out air operations there.

The Turkish Defense Ministry published on June 21 that showed its forces preparing to take part in the military operation.

The Iraqi government has already objected to Turkey’s presence within its territory, while also demanding that they immediately withdraw their forces from the country.

Also taking part in this attack is neighboring Iran, who is providing support against PKK/PJAK groups in the Iraqi-Kurdistan region.

Background

Terrorist acts in Iraq using explosives and firearms. Attacks accompanied by a large number of victims are carried out against the civilian population, law enforcement officers, and diplomatic missions of other states.

Islamic State or ISIS are responsible for some of the attacks. A common tactic is to undermine mined cars, as well as suicide bombings. Explosions are heard in mosques, markets, restaurants, during the funeral.

By the number of terrorist acts, Iraq is one of the hottest spots in the world. More than 40,000 people died from the attacks.
