NEW DELHI, (BM) – Birender Singh Dhanoa, both in the post of chief marshal and after resignation, is an ardent supporter of the purchase of the fourth generation French multirole fighters Dassault Rafale, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Polit Express magazine.
At the same time, the military expert believes that the Russian S-400 air defense systems have some advantages. According to the specialist, with the use of both combat vehicles, India will gain technological superiority over Pakistan.
The fact is that both products have a range of destruction, which is sufficient to eliminate the aircraft of a neighbor, such as the multifunctional light fighters of the fourth generation F-16, etc., in the sky over its territory.
Rafale will strike at enemy aircraft with Meteor long-range guided missiles, the range of fire of which is 150-200 km, and the S-400 will use 40N6 with an indicator of 250 km.
At the same time, the military vehicles themselves should not suffer from the Pakistani army, since their PL-12 and AIM-120C air-to-air missiles have a maximum range of 100 km. If we look at China, then, according to Birender Dhanoa, it is doubtful that Rafale is effectively opposing the PLA.
He explained that the Himalayan mountains lie between the two states, and they are a serious problem for line of sight. In this case, missiles with a range of at least 300-400 km can be delivered in Tibet or India, but they will work only within the line of sight.
The military expert concluded that in this situation, the S-400 air defense systems, developed to combat advanced heavy stealth aircraft, would be more useful. Journalists from the American edition of Military Watch believe that plans for Pakistan’s renewal of its aircraft fleet, which should take place with the support of the PRC [People’s Republic of China – ed.], also pose a threat to the Rafale.
At the moment, the countries are already cooperating on the creation of the AMCA stealth fighter. However, the authors of the article argue that he will not be able to challenge the S-400 air defense system.
Last year, India ordered Russian air defense systems
Last year, India ordered Russian air defense systems. On November 15, Indian media reported that the first set of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) would be delivered to India in 16-18 months. The first installment of $ 850 million – 15% of the total cost – was made in September.
Recall, November 20, the general director of Rosoboronexport, Alexander Mikheev, announced that the first regiment of the S-400 air defense system would be delivered to India in September 2021.
Following New Delhi’s decision to buy the S-400, the country began to suffer criticism, especially from Washington. The United States is threatening India with economic sanctions, following the same pattern that Washington has threatened Turkey.
Indian authorities responed to Washington that India’s purchase of S-400 missile systems is an independent decision and should be respected.
“We will not depend on other states in what we do in terms of our national security and defense. If we are committed to the agreement on S-400, which we have, then other countries must respect this decision,” said Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniyan Jayshankar.
“By signing an agreement with Russia on the supply of S-400 missiles in the amount of $ 5 billion, India made it clear to all states that it makes decisions independently, based on its own national interests,” he added.
Later same year, President Vladimir Putin announced that the supply of S-400 air defense systems to India was going according to plan.
Production of the Indian S-400 has began in January
The production of S-400 air defense systems for India has begun in January 2020, the Russian deputy foreign minister said in a statement.
And this despite the US threats to impose sanctions on any country that buys from the Russian defense sector under CAATSA (Countering America’s Opponents through the Sanctions Act).
Deputy Ambassador of Russia to India, speaking on Friday, January 17, at a press conference in the capital, said that the production of five S-400 missile defense systems for New Delhi had begun. Under a contract signed in 2018, Russia is supposed to supply India with five S-400 systems by a total value of more than $ 5 billion by 2025.
India has tried to put pressure on Russia for faster delivery of S-400s
During the India-China crisis days ago on the Sino-Indian border, New Delhi asked Russia for faster production of S-400 systems and correspondingly fast delivery.
The Government of India has begun to fill the gaps in the country’s defenses by stockpiling and completing procurement.
Then, India was interested in accelerating the delivery of Russian S-400 Triumph. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh discussed such an opportunity during a three-day visit to Russia.
Earlier this year, Moscow has postponed the delivery of air defense systems worth $ 5.4 billion until December 2021 due to the proliferation of COVID-19.
