MOSCOW, (BM) – Work is underway on a universal engine for Russian fighters, said Evgeny Semivelichenko, managing director of the Lyulka Design Bureau of the Ufa Engine-Building Production Association [part of Rostec], learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
Semivelichenko said that “the possibility of creating a kind of universal engine” is being considered. It will use the “previous engine components”. At the same time, it is planned to obtain “higher technical characteristics”.
The universal engine can be installed on the Su-27, Su-30, Su-35 without modifying the airframe, RIA Novosti reports. As Semivelichenko said, “there is such an order from the Ministry of Defense.”
Also, the Ufa Engine-Building Production Association is technically ready to start mass production of the second stage engine for the Su-57, but it is necessary to complete its tests, Semivelichenko said.
In addition, he said that it is planned to manufacture the “hot part” of the VK-650V demonstrator engine by the end of the year to replace the French one on the Ka-226T light helicopter.
We will remind, it was reported that Russia planned to create a hybrid aircraft engine using alternative fuels.
Will the new engine change the performance of the three fighters in any way?
In reality, the universal engine of the three aircraft does not mean that they will use the same engine with the same characteristics. This is impossible due to the fact that each of the three listed exterminators performs different functions in flight, and has different properties.
A new universal engine means that future engines will be made in “one mold”, and their very small change or re-regulation of basic components will change the corresponding presentation of the fighters.
This, in turn, will significantly reduce the financial costs of engine production.
In other words – a universal engine with different settings will allow better performance of combat functions of all three aircraft simultaneously, especially if they are in a combat air formation “flock”. Just a few days ago, we wrote exactly this fact – Russian fighters are training hard “flock” tactic with the participation of drones and even the fifth generation Su-57 aircraft.
Of course, the most important feature that distinguishes Russian aircraft from any in the world is its maneuverability, and according to experts, it will be preserved and equally equal for all three aircraft.
Russia also turned to an electric motor for the Su-57
As we wrote earlier this year the Russian aerospace forces can get an “electric plane.” On a fifth-generation fighter, hydraulic systems will be replaced by electric engines. This will reduce the radar visibility of the machine, increase its maneuverability and simplify maintenance.
It is planned that the “electric” Su-57 will be able to fly in 2022. According to experts, the modernization will also make the fighter more tenacious when hit by missiles and shells.
Russia is already producing a Su-57 fighter with a new engine
From the mid-2020s, the supply of Su-57 fighters to the Russian Air Force will be carried out with the latest fifth-generation engine, said Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko on May 7 in an interview with National Defense magazine.
He recalled that the timing of supplies of the Su-57 to the armed forces has been repeatedly shifted, this year serial deliveries of Su-57 aircraft will begin, moreover, in two stages, he said. At the first stage, “until the mid-2020s,” the aircraft will be delivered with fourth-generation engines.
“And in the second stage, after the completion of the tests, supplies with the engine and fifth-generation power plants with increased fuel efficiency and lower life cycle costs will already begin,” Krivoruchko said.
First flew of Russian Su-57 was in 2010. According to experts, the combination of high maneuverability, supersonic speed, as well as a modern complex of avionics and low visibility make the Su-57 inaccessible to competitors.
Recall that the contract for the supply of 76 Su-57 fighters to the Russian Aerospace Forces was concluded at the Army-2019 forum. But the first production machine for the VKS in December 2019 crashed near Khabarovsk. The general director of the United Aircraft Corporation, Yuri Slyusar, indicated that the work of the Su-57 crash commission would help to improve the aircraft.
