The advantage of the new system is the ability to hit 10 ballistic missiles simultaneously, the speed of which is from 18 to 25 thousand kilometers per hour.

According to the publication, the S-500 is highly mobile. The complex can be brought on alert in a few minutes. Another advantage of the system is that it can be transported on warships, which means greater freedom of movement.

In addition, the S-500 is able to detect a threat, decide on a response method, launch its missiles at targets and destroy them in just four seconds.

“These characteristics turn the Russian complex into a global threat, for which the world is forced to silently watch,” the author of the article notes.

In his opinion, the new air defense system will not only inspire terror, but will also bring Russia a lot of money.

What experts said about the S-500 capabilities?

Based on the characteristics of the S-500, it will be used as an element of mobile strategic missile defense, Igor Korotchenko, director of the Center for the Analysis of World Arms Trade, said on July 3.

So he commented on the words of the commander of the Russian Air Force Colonel-General Sergei Surovikin that the S-500 Prometheus could destroy hypersonic weapons in space.

The S-500 can destroy virtually all existing and promising aerial targets in near space and in the atmosphere, therefore it can solve strategic missile defense issues. In addition, it is a mobile system, which means it can be quickly deployed to any threatened area,” – explained Korotchenko.

The expert said that the exact characteristics of the S-500 are classified today, but it is known that it is “omnivorous.”

“The S-500 is capable of detecting, tracking as targets traditional for such systems – aircraft of all types, tactical and operational-tactical missiles, ballistic missiles, as well as drones and promising hypersonic missiles. The system operates in a wide range: in the atmosphere and near space, on heights of the order of 270-300 kilometers,” said Korotchenko.

According to him, the S-500 is a fully automated system, “combat work, target detection and tracking, missile selection for use is carried out, in fact, without the participation of the operator, his task is only to confirm the launch.”

Competitors of similar systems may appear no earlier than in 15-20 years, until that time in the West they will not be able to create such technologies, predicts Korotchenko. “The development of analogues of the S-500 is in the initial stage, and we, in fact, have begun the stage of field tests.”

The Ministry of Defense stated that the first S-500 set could be transferred to the troops in 2021, then, after several years, mass production will be launched. For this, Almaz-Antey [producer] put into operation three new sites in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Kirov, Korotchenko added.

One of the competitors of the S-500, according to the expert, is the American mobile anti-ballistic missile complex THAAD, “but its capabilities are limited only by the atmospheric interception of medium-range missiles, while the S-500 is a multifunctional system.”

Chinese experts say the S-500 will be able to shoot down meteorites

Russian S-500 “Prometheus” anti-aircraft missile systems are by far the most advanced anti-missile system in the Russian arsenal and claim to be the best in the world. This opinion was expressed by experts of the Chinese publication Sina on September 23, 2019.

The author of the publication notes that the Prometeas created on the basis of the S-400 can effectively resist not only all types of modern aircraft, including cruise missiles, drones, ultrafast ballistic guns and transatmospheric hypersonic aircraft, but even intercept meteorites.

In this regard, the story of the fall of a meteorite on February 15, 2013 near Chelyabinsk is mentioned. Then only fragments of the cosmic body flew to the earth, the “power” of which exceeded the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

“In social networks, this incident was called the” miracle of the S-500’s work, “because, as they say, while the tests were being conducted of a new system that intercepted this meteorite and successfully destroyed it, thanks to which the Earth did not suffer in any way,” writes Sina.

It is specified that the range of the new Russian air defense system will significantly surpass its predecessors. He will be able to fire at once on ten targets at a distance of 500 km.

In addition, the complex will be additionally equipped with a new type of radar station, increasing the range of enemy detection by 150-200 kilometers.

“The combat effectiveness of the entire complex will be several times greater than the effectiveness of any modern air defense system in the world,” the author of the article emphasizes.

Russia will integrate a naval version of the system into its ships

As we reported on July 13, the Russian aircraft carrier of the 23000 Shtorm project, which is planned to be adopted by the Russian Navy in the next decade, will receive the S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system.

According Russian sources, the S-500 Prometheus is capable of hitting all existing types of aerodynamic and ballistic targets, detecting the latter at distances up to 800 kilometers.

This will make the Russian aircraft carrier truly invincible, since any attack on it will be suppressed for hundreds of kilometers.

“It was previously reported that the laying of the 1st aircraft carrier of project 23000 Shtorm could be carried out by 2025, and that the basis for its aircraft wing would be deck versions of the Su-35 and Su-57 fighters [Su-35K and Su- 57K]” the article author said.

The author also said that “so far, such sources of fighter generation 4 ++ and 5 official sources have not presented even in the form of mock options. Tests of the “regular” [non-deck] version of the Su-57 are ongoing. There was also information that the Shtorm aircraft carrier will be equipped with the latest S-500K S-500K (SAM) Prometheus system – a ship-based version”.

Having received the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter and the Prometey S-500 system in its arsenal, the Russian aircraft carrier of the 23000 Shtorm project will simply become an invincible fortress – in fact, he will not be afraid of even hypersonic weapons, since the capabilities of the Russian Prometheus for this are more than enough.

However, the US THAAD system outperforms the S-400 and S-500 in several respects

Russian air defense systems S-400 and S-500 are advertised in the press and are in demand in many countries. However, are they effective? Experts wanted to answer this question.

The American THAAD air defense system was taken as an object for comparison. So, the first parameter was the maximum range. At the S-500 it is 400 kilometers. A similar indicator for Ted and S-400 is at the level of 250 km.

The next component is the detection range of enemy objects. The THAAD has a thousand kilometers. S-500 and S-400 are more modest distances – 800 and 600 km. After all, the sooner the target is discovered, the more time is left for a decision.

The situation is different with subtle goals. THAAD can recognize them at a distance of 700 km. The S-500 and S-400 have a more modest indicator: 420 and 400 kilometers.

The western model has superiority and maximum flight altitude. The THAAD has 200 kilometers. At the S-500 it is 2 times less. In turn, the S-400 is able to boast a modest 30 km.

However, the S-500 with 7200 m/s is the leader in terms of interception speed. Next come the THAAD (5400 m/s) and the S-400 (4800 m/s).

In terms of ballistic missiles, the THAAD is again ahead with a distance of 250 km. The S-500 and S-400 range is 180 and 40 kilometers.

From this we can conclude that the THAAD anti-ballistic missile defense systems are not inferior to Russian-made. In some respects, superiority is even observed.

Is the comparison between S-500 and THAAD correct? Experts say that these are different products in terms of functionality

This comparison is not correct, since we are talking about systems with different specializations, Russian and Amercian military experts said.

The American THAAD system (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is a mobile land-based missile defense system designed for high-altitude atmospheric destruction of medium-range ballistic missiles.

At the same time, the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system is designed primarily for hitting aerodynamic targets (aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles), its ability to combat ballistic targets is limited in range and height.

At the same time, of course, the Russian system is more universal. THAAD’s capabilities in the fight against maneuverable targets and aircraft are minimal, while using such a missile defense system would be tantamount to hammering nails, especially considering the cost of US missile defense.

The THAAD mobile ground-based missile defense system, designed for high-altitude transatmospheric interception of medium-range missiles while creating a zonal missile defense system in a theater of operations, has been developed in the United States since 1992.

The system developer is Lockheed Martin Corporation. The cost of R&D to create an anti-ballistic missile system is estimated at about $ 15 billion.

The second important difference between THAAD and S-400 is the way to hit the target. An American rocket hits the target with kinetic impact, that is, it hits the rocket itself.

Its warhead is a highly maneuverable interceptor. It is a technically sophisticated device that searches for, captures, and hits a target using only the kinetic energy of a high-speed impact.

One of the main features of this interceptor is the gyrostabilized multispectral infrared homing head (IR-GOS). In addition to the IR-GOS, the THAAD single-stage missile interceptor is equipped with a command-inertial control system, an electric power source, a computer, and its own propulsion system for maneuvering and orientation.

At the same time, anti-aircraft missiles of the Russian S-400 Triumph air defense system hit air targets due to a cloud of fragments that form after the warhead of a missile is detonated in the immediate vicinity of the target.

It is also worth noting that the S-400 can fire at 360 degrees, while THAAD has a limited firing range. For example, Russian 9M96E and 9M96E2 anti-aircraft missiles, optimized to combat modern high-precision weapons, cruise missiles and ballistic targets, including inconspicuous ones, use a “cold” vertical launch.

Immediately before starting its marching engine, rockets are thrown out of the container to a height of more than 30 meters. After rising to this height, an anti-aircraft missile, using a gas-dynamic system, inclines toward a given target.

An important difference between the two complexes is also their radar. The American system has better vision. The detection range of the AN / TPY-2 radar is 1000 kilometers versus 600 kilometers for the S-400 complex.

The multifunctional AN / TPY-2 radar operates in the X-band and consists of 25,344 active PPM. This is a radar with an active phased array (AFAR). AFAR consists of active radiating elements, each of which consists of a radiating element and an active device (transceiver module – PPM).

A very high resolution and vigilance of the American radar is achieved by a huge amount of PPM and a sophisticated signal processing algorithm. At the same time, the American radar costs a pretty penny, the cost of an innovative radar can exceed $ 500 million.

Price may play a role. The cost of the S-400 division with 8 launchers is about $ 500 million. So in December 2017, the details of the contract for the supply of S-400 Triumph air defense systems to Turkey became known.

Ankara should receive 4 S-400 divisions for a total of about $ 2.5 billion. At the same time, the Pentagon’s Defense Cooperation and Security Directorate announced that the deal with Saudi Arabia for the supply of THAAD missile defense systems amounted to about $ 15 billion.

Under the contract, the Kingdom will receive from the United States 44 launchers, 16 command posts, 7 radars, as well as 360 interceptor missiles for this complex.
