DAMASCUS, (BM) – Fighter jets of the Russian Aerospace Forces launched an airstrike against militants in the Latakia province of northwestern Syria after undermining a Russian military patrol, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Gazeta.ru.
Earlier, the Syrian military detained three fighters of the extremist organization Magavir al-Saura, who spied on Russian, Syrian and Iranian military installations.
On the morning of July 14, the Russian and Turkish military in Syria were injured due to a bomb explosion in the path of the patrol. The explosion occurred between an armored car of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation and a Turkish armored car.
Three Russian servicemen were slightly injured, their lives are in danger. They were evacuated to the Khmeimim air base.
Turks were also injured, but the severity of injuries to their soldiers was not reported. According to the Russian side, the improvised explosive device along the route of armored vehicles was laid by militants.
On the same day, the Syrian military detained three militants of the extremist organization Magavir al-Saura. They were taken to the city of Tadmor, located near Palmyra. The detainees were part of an armed group detonated in a minefield. The incident killed several radicals.
“Our group consisted of eight people: seven fighters and one guide who smuggles and transports personnel and drugs. We went on a motorcycle on a mission and hit a minefield,” said the gunman Jasem al-Ali.
According to him, as a result, the group commander, conductor and another man died in a mine explosion.
“We got lost and did not know where to go, because the conductor died, and began to look for a way out, continued to move. Then we were captured, and the Syrian troops took us here,” the detainee explained.
He admitted: the task of the armed group was espionage.
Extremists needed to collect data on Russian, Iranian and Syrian military installations. For this, as said the militant, they were sent to the province of Rakka, in the city of Al Mansoura. He specified that the starting point was the village of Al-Tanf.
The detainees said that the curators gave them a large sum of money, “thousands of dollars” to complete the assignment, but the commander of the Yazan group had all the money.
“He was blown up by a mine, and we lost everything,” Abdullah al-Mishuat told reporters.
On the eve of the air defense of the military base of the Russian Federation in Khmeimim intercepted and destroyed two attack drone drone. According to RIA Novosti, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called this attack a terrorist attack.
“There can be no reconciliation with terrorists,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin told reporters. The priority, he said, is the security of Russian troops and civilians who are in Syria, in agreement with Damascus.
There are no drones affected by the attack, and no material damage was caused. Air defense assets of the air base destroyed targets five kilometers from their borders.
Militant drones approached Khmeimim from the northeast.
At the end of June, another militant attack on a Russian air base took place. Together with the Syrian air defense, two UAVs were shot down, trying to reach Khmeimim. There were no casualties as a result of the attack, the air base continued to operate normally.
At the same time, the United States Special Representative for Syria, James Jeffrey, during an online seminar at the Institute of the Middle East, said that the United States did not seek to curtail Russia’s presence in Syria.
“Another point that characterizes our approach is that we do not demand a complete victory. We are not saying that [Syrian President Bashar] Assad should leave <…>. We also do not say that the Russians should leave,” he said.
As Jeffrey admitted, the American authorities would prefer that there were no Russians in Syria, but this is not part of American politics in the SAR.
At this stage, the United States is not considering withdrawing its troops from the Arab Republic, the State Department spokesman confirmed.
“President [US Donald Trump earlier] <…> made it clear that although we will eventually leave Syria, nothing [of this] is currently being considered,” the American diplomat emphasized.
Jeffrey also spoke about the new large-scale US sanctions against Syria. He assured that they were not aimed at the collapse of the economy of the Arab Republic.
“Believe me, Assad himself is more than capable of achieving this <…>. He copes with the task of pushing the [Syrian] pound into oblivion and undermining what remains of the Syrian GDP,” said the US special representative.
War in Syria
In February, Turkey lost at least 62 troops killed in Syria, nearly 100 soldiers were wounded, dozens of Turkish armored vehicles were destroyed and more than ten drones, including drone, were shot down. Washington has repeatedly accused Moscow of involvement in the deaths of Turkish soldiers, Russia rejects these allegations.
In early March, the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, concluded an agreement according to which a ceasefire came into force in the Idlib de-escalation zone.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad later said that if the US and Turkish military did not leave the country, Damascus would be able to use force.
The reason for the Russian-Turkish negotiations was a sharp aggravation of the situation in Idlib, where in January a large-scale offensive by the Syrian army against the positions of the armed opposition and terrorists began.
Government forces recaptured nearly half of the Idlib de-escalation zone and left behind a number of Turkish observation posts. After that, Ankara sharply increased its military contingent in the region and launched the operation “Spring Shield” to push the Syrian troops. Turkey is also supported by militants loyal to it.
