CAIRO, (BM) – Egyptian and Russian military sites said that Cairo asked Moscow to speed up deliveries of coastal defense systems, specifically the Bastion, to the Libyan National Army (LNA), learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing AMN.
According to RT Arabic, due to Turkish activity off the coast of Libya and the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt is forced to take urgent action.
Citing military experts, the report said Egypt plans to accelerate the acquisition of these anti-ship missiles in order to ward off any Turkish naval assault.
The sources said that the Bastion system is able to protect the Egyptian coast with a length of more than 600 km from potential enemy landings, as the complex is deployed to combat sites within only five minutes.
The media report noted that Egypt is enhancing its naval capabilities in light of the challenges it faces in the Mediterranean region, especially after the Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak said, citing sources close to the Justice and Development Party in Turkey, in mid-June that Turkey was planning to establish a naval base in the Libyan city of Misrata.
It is noteworthy that military sources confirmed to RT earlier that Egypt had already contracted the Bastion system in 2013, where the military source confirmed that one system can protect 600 km of coastline and secure a sea area of 100,000 square km, and its batteries can include 18 vehicles.
More about Bastion coastal mobile missile system
The Bastion coastal missile complex (DBK) with the unified supersonic homing anti-ship cruise missile (RCC) Yakhont (Onyx) is designed to destroy surface ships of various classes and types from the composition of amphibious assault forces, convoys, naval and aircraft carrier strike groups, and also single ships and ground-based radio contrast targets in conditions of intense fire and electronic countermeasures.
Work on the creation of the complex began in the late 1970s and early 1980s at the NPO Mashinostroyeniya. The complex was adopted by the Russian Armed Forces in 2010. The mass production of Onyx missiles (for the Russian Armed Forces) and Yakhont (for export deliveries) is conducted by Strela NPO (Orenburg city).
The Bastion complex is offered in two versions – the mobile Bastion-P and the stationary Bastion-S.
The Bastion Mobile Coastal Missile System (PBRK) protects the coast for more than 600 km from the landing operations of the enemy, a distant frontier of the political and administrative region as part of a unified coastal defense system.
The time from the receipt of the order on the march to the full deployment in combat positions is five minutes, after which the complex is fully ready for firing.
The position of the complex can be removed from the coastline by 200 kilometers. After its deployment, PBRK can remain in full combat readiness for 3-5 days, depending on the available fuel reserves.
The structure of the Bastion PBRK includes:
- anti-ship missiles “Yakhont” in the transport-launch glass (TPS);
- K-340P self-propelled launchers on the MZKT-7930 chassis (crew – three people);
- combat control vehicle (crew – five people);
- equipment for information and technical interfacing of combat assets of the complex with the head command post;
- automated combat control system of the complex;
- a set of maintenance tools.
A fully loaded and equipped rocket is stored in a sealed TPN with compactly folded wings and plumage. The necessary routine checks are carried out without removing the rocket from the TPN.
In addition to the anti-ship complex “Bastion” can be delivered:
- transport and loading machines K-342R;
- combat duty support vehicles;
- educational tools;
- helicopter target designation complex.
The Bastion mobile coastal missile system with Yakhont missile launcher has the following advantages: full autonomy of the combat missile launcher, a set of adaptive flight paths, and high supersonic speed along the entire trajectory.
Also, the complex is distinguished by high combat effectiveness in electronic and fire countermeasures, high mobility and stealth. At the same time, it is compact and requires a minimum amount of maintenance and minimum combat crew.
The main tactical and technical characteristics of the PRK:
- Flight range: along a combined path – up to 300 km, along a mixed path – up to 120 km.
- RCC flight altitude: on the marching section – up to 14,000 meters, on the final section of the trajectory – 10-15 meters.
- Maximum flight speed of RCC: 750 m / s.
- Missile mass: launch – 3000 kg, with TPN – 3900 kg.
- TPS dimensions: length – 8900 mm, diameter 720 mm.
- The mass of the warhead is 200 kg.
Control system: inertial navigation system, radio altimeter, homing radar head. Starting and starting stage: solid fuel. Marching engine: type – direct-flow engine, fuel – kerosene T-6.
In November 2016, the Bastion coastal missile systems were used to destroy ground targets in Syria, which was the first in the history of combat use of the complex against ground targets.
Libyan civil war
In Libya, armed clashes are currently taking place between supporters of different leaders. The country is led by the Government of National Accord (GNA), headed by Prime Minister Fayez Saraj, the “eastern government” led by Abdullah Abdurrahaman at-Thani.
The eastern government is supported by the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar.
Recall that January 13 in Moscow, negotiations were held between the heads of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalif Haftar and the Government of National Accord (GNA) Faiz Sarraj. Also present were members of the Foreign Ministries of Russia and Turkey.
On the meeting the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, has notified Russia about the conditions for continuing negotiations on the signing of a peace agreement in Libya.
According to the requirements of Haftar, the militias operating in Libya are required to surrender weapons in the period from 45 to 90 days. This process should be controlled by a special commission created by the LNA together with the UN.
Haftar also refused to recognize Turkey as an intermediary in resolving the situation in Libya, since the Turkish side is not neutral and supports the Government of National Accord (GNA).
