WASHINGTON, RIADH, (BM) – US military-industrial company Raytheon has won a tender for more than $ 2.2 billion in supplies of military equipment and equipment to Saudi Arabia, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing the Pentagon statement.
“Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems from Woburn, Massachusetts, received a $ 2,271,181,543 contract under the Foreign Military Sales [FMS] program for the Saudi Arabia Kingdom,” the statement said.
Under the contract, Raytheon will provide Riyadh with seven radar surveillance stations and spare parts for radars, as well as carry out a number of other rearmament works for Saudi Arabia.
Work under the contract will take place over the next seven years with an expected completion date of August 31, 2027.
Under the contract, Raytheon will provide seven Army/Navy Transportable Surveillance and Control Model 2 radars, radar spares, obsolescence design, sustainment services, and initial contractor logistics support for Saudi Arabia, the Defence Department explained.
What really the AN/TPY-2 radar system is?
The AN/TPY-2 is a missile defense radar that can detect, track and discriminate ballistic missiles. It operates in the X-band of the electromagnetic spectrum. This enables it to see targets more clearly and distinguish between an actual menace and non-threats, like launch debris.
AN/TPY-2 can operate in two modes: Forward-based mode and Terminal mode. In Forward-based mode, the radar detects ballistic missiles after they are launched.
In Terminal mode, the radar helps guide interceptors toward a descending missile to defeat the threat. Most notably when operating in Terminal mode, AN/TPY-2 leads the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense ballistic missile defense system by guiding the THAAD missile.
According to the manufacturer [Raytheon – ed.] AN/TPY-2 has a record of flawless performance against all classes of ballistic missiles.
Saudi Arabia will integrade and ccordinate the radars with existing THAADs in the country
BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that on April 11 2019 the Government of Saudi Arabia bought forty-four (44) Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) launchers, three hundred sixty (360) THAAD Interceptor Missiles, sixteen (16) THAAD Fire Control and Communications Mobile Tactical Station Group, seven (7) AN/TPY-2 THAAD radars. Also included are THAAD Battery maintenance equipment, forty-three (43) prime movers (trucks), generators, electrical power units, trailers, communications equipment, tools, test and maintenance equipment, repair and return, system integration and checkout, spare/repair parts, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor technical and logistics personnel support services, facilities construction, studies, and other related elements of logistics and program support.
The THAAD system is being designed, built, and integrated by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control acting as prime contractor. Key subcontractors include Raytheon, Boeing, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Honeywell, BAE Systems, Oshkosh Defense, and MiltonCAT.
The THAAD, formerly Theater High Altitude Area Defense, is an American anti-ballistic missile defense system designed to shoot down short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase (descent or reentry) by intercepting with a hit-to-kill approach. It has a maximum firing of 200 km at an altitude of up to 150 km.
The AN/TPY-2 radar system is a part of European defense
In the waters of the Mediterranean and Black Seas, combat duty of destroyers of the Orly Burke type of the US Navy equipped with the Aegis multifunctional control system was organized;
An anti-missile AN / TPY-2 mobile early warning radar consisting of 13 missile defense batteries and 10 US Air Defense and Missile Defense Command was deployed in Turkey in the Kureggik region;

It is noteworthy that even for such a short period, the Americans did not leave Europe without a missile defense umbrella, quickly transferring from the state of Texas (USA) to Romania the battery of the THAAD (Theater High Altitude Area Defense) 69 anti-aircraft missile brigade 32 of the air defense and missile defense command. Thus, the issue of building up the missile defense capabilities of NATO’s south-eastern flank was worked out, so to speak, “just in case.”

In addition, on April 8, 2020, the commander of the Strategic Command for Reforming NATO Allied Forces (Norfolk, USA), General Andre Lanata of the French Air Force, representatives of the Armed Forces of Bulgaria, Greece, the Czech Republic, Romania and Turkey took part in the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding Signing Ceremony on the establishment and operation of the Joint Center for the Analysis and Summarization of the NATO Air Defense and Missile Defense Experience (IAMD CΟE).
The tasks of the center include:
- ensure the stability and security of NATO airspace through coordination, control and operation of airspace, including measures to deter and protect against any air and missile threat;
- Resist threats, including, including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, as well as electromagnetic and cyber threats;
- increase interoperability and support the development and use of the capabilities of NATO and partner countries for integration in missile defense through the NATO integrated air defense and missile defense system (NATINAMDS);
- to provide the possibility of comprehensive research, the development and testing of doctrines and concepts on air defense and missile defense, the development of common programs and training methods.
- The joint center for the analysis and generalization of the experience of NATO’s air defense and missile defense will be directly subordinate to the strategic command of the reform of the NATO Allied Forces and will be located on the territory of the NATO missile range near Chania (Crete, Greece).
Implementation of the program as an element of global impact
