KYIV, (BM) – The American missile armament of strategic bombers B-52H Stratofortress is capable of “delivering a strike” at Russia without entering the airspace controlled by the Russian anti-aircraft missile systems S-400 Triumph. This was stated in the Ukrainian consulting company Defense Express.
So Ukrainian experts commented on the news of the recent B-52 flight over the Arctic Ocean near the Russian border.
Defense Express attracted the attention of the range of cruise missiles that equip Stratofortress. They are able to hit a target at a distance of about 1-1.2 thousand km.
“Enough to attack Russia’s main strategic targets in the Arctic and parts of Siberia,” Ukrainian experts are convinced.
In particular, the B-52 can hit the Arctic military bases of the Russian Federation, they believe. The bombers also pose a threat to the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route, which ensures the viability of many Russian regions and is extremely important for the Russian economy.
“In recent days, this is the second episode of a demonstration of the strategic aviation capabilities of the United States for the Kremlin,” Ukraine said.
Earlier, recall, the US European Command (EUCOM) confirmed the training flight of four B-52H Stratofortress. The link of military vehicles worked out conditional striking by cruise missiles in the airspace beyond the Arctic Circle.
The US military said the Pentagon is working with “multinational and interdepartmental public and private partners” to maintain “peace and stability” in the Arctic.
“This is a strategically important region with growing geopolitical and global importance, and these missions of the bombing task force demonstrate commitment to our partners and allies,” said US Air Force Commander Europe and Africa General Jeffrey Harrigian. According to him, the use and deployment of US strategic bombers in the Old World meets the tasks of “general security”.
This flight was carried out by four B-52Hs, flying from the Minot Air Base in North Dakota. In the air they were supported by KC-135 air tankers from the Mildenhol British Air Force Base. Link bombers circled the Arctic in a circle. In the Arctic part of the route, they were accompanied by Norwegian F-16 and F-35 fighters.
US strategic military aviation regularly performs training and reconnaissance flights at Russian borders. In October last year, for example, the US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress conducted an “imitation of the bombing” of Crimea. Two B-52s made a training flight over the Black Sea, according to the EUCOM release. The flight duration was about 12 hours.
B-52H bombers were deployed from the United States to Europe in March 2019.
“The purpose of the arrival is joint training at the European theater to improve the interaction of bombers. These missions provide an opportunity to participate in joint operations with US allies and partners, as well as demonstrate the capabilities of the reserve forces to ensure combat readiness,” EUCOM said then.
The B-52 Stratofortress aircraft was produced from 1952 to 1962 and became one of the symbols of the Cold War between the USSR and the USA. It was created as a strategic bomber capable of delivering two thermonuclear bombs of high power anywhere in the Soviet Union.
Today it is the main long-range bomber aircraft in the United States.
