ATHENS, (BM) – Greece is ready for all possible scenarios, including a military clash, Greek Defense Minister Nikolaos Panayotopoulos said on June 4, commenting on television the development of the situation around Turkey’s plans to develop hydrocarbons near the Greek islands, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
“We will do what is required in order to protect our sovereign rights to the absolute extent. So, the smart one will understand,” said Panayotopoulos.
The Minister admitted that recently Turkey’s actions are “quite aggressive”. He said that in his opinion, Greece has only one answer: “on the one hand, exhaust all diplomatic means, and on the other, take care of strengthening the deterrent potential of the armed forces”.
In response to the question whether Greece is ready for the last scenario, Panayotopoulos replied: “Exactly! The day before yesterday, the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister’s office announced that we were getting ready for all opportunities. Among all these possibilities, of course, there is a military clash.”
Recall, May 29, Turkey announced that it intends to begin developing hydrocarbon deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean, which Greece considers its exclusive economic zone, since it is located near the Greek islands. The Turkish National Security Council announced on June 2 that it intends to fight for its interests “without any compromises”.
The conflict arose after Turkey signed a memorandum with one of the belligerents of Libya on the division of sea zones. Referring to this document, as well as to the thesis that the islands do not have a continental shelf, Turkey declared its rights to a substantial part of the resources of the Mediterranean Sea near Crete, Karpathos and Rhodes. The escalation of the conflict stopped in March and April 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic in Greece and Turkey.
