WASHINGTON, (BM) – The rough political blunder of the administration of former US President Barack Obama allowed Russia to consolidate its position in Syria and the Middle East, learned citing TASS. This was stated by Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs David Schenker at a video seminar at the Washington Institute of the Middle East.

“As for Russia in the region, I think that the Obama administration at its own peril and risk welcomed Russia’s arrival in Syria, thinking that it would put [Moscow] in a difficult position, (…) and Russia turned the tide of the war, and the Assad’s regime remains there until now,” the American diplomat said.

According to Schenker, at that time it also allowed Russia to create a base and gave it courage to take further steps in the region. He cited the situation in Libya as an example. “For 45 years, this has been the cornerstone of American politics – to keep Russia away from the Middle East,” the representative of the State Department added.

The diplomat also stressed that Russia in the Middle East “plays a destructive role.” According to him, the United States believes that Moscow should leave the region.

In 2011, a civil war broke out in Libya. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled the country since 1969, was overthrown and killed. On the side of his opponents fought the forces of the international coalition, which included France, the USA, Great Britain and other countries.

At present, there is a situation of dual power in Libya: a parliament is sitting in the east in Tobruk, and the Government of national accord is sitting in the west in Tripoli.
