MOSCOW, (BM) – The signing of a contract for the construction of amphibious assault ship (AAS) with reference to a source in the military-industrial complex was reported by TASS, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

The amount of the agreement, according to the source, is approximately $1.4 billion.

The agency does not have official confirmation of this information, however, as the Zaliv press service told TASS, the plant is technically ready to begin construction of helicopter carriers for the Russian fleet.

Recall that the imminent signing of an agreement on the construction of a AAS for the Russian Navy became known in February 2020. The ship’s displacement should be 25 thousand tons with a length of approximately 220 meters. On each of the ships it will be possible to place more than 20 heavy helicopters (it is not entirely clear which rotorcraft are in question). It is also known that ULS will be able to transport up to 900 marines.

If the signing of the contract really took place, then this event opens a completely new chapter in the history of the Russian Navy. Recall that now Russia does not have landing ships of this subclass. Previously, the country wanted to purchase a Mistral-type AAS from France: two such ships were planned to be built on its territory, and two more in Russia. On the way of these plans were political contradictions between Russia and the West: subsequently, two universal landing ships built for the Russian Navy were sold to Egypt.

The importance of AAS for the modern fleet is difficult to overestimate. As the American experience of the Vietnam War has shown, such ships are extremely useful when it comes to landing a large number of people and pieces of equipment ashore. The advantages of AAS are that, being very large naval units, they combine the capabilities of other landing ships, which contributes to the best coordination of actions when landing.

The world leader in the number of universal landing ships is the United States. In the future, China may “compete” with them: in April, the Celestial Empire launched the second AAS of project 075, which became one of the largest universal landing ships in the world. According to open sources, its displacement is 36 thousand tons, and its length is 250 meters. In total, according to various sources, China intends to have at its disposal from three to six such ships.
