WARSAW, (BM) – The coronavirus pandemic negatively impacted the US Army’s potential to “deter” Russia and China. This opinion was expressed by analyst Mateusz Piotrowski in the Bulletin of the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM – Polski Instytut Spraw Międzynarodowych), learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
“The pandemic is negatively affecting the deterrent potential of the United States in relation to China and Russia, although at the moment the consequences are limited. A significant point is related to the cancellation of part of the exercises, during which it was supposed to send a signal to Russia about the readiness and ability of the United States in the event of a crisis to transfer significant troops to Europe, to the eastern flank of NATO,” the author of the bulletin reads, with the text of which he got acquainted with BulgarianMilitary.com.
Mentioning Eastern Europe, the specialist clarifies that some of the canceled military activities involved the development of the tactics of the United States and its allies in “protecting the Baltic countries and Poland.”
“The number of troops participating in Defender Europe 2020 maneuvers had to be reduced from 20 thousand to 6 thousand, which entailed the cancellation of four related exercises, including the annual Saber Strike maneuvers, on which the ability of the United States and the Allied forces to defend Poland and the Baltic states is being worked out,” the text emphasizes.
At the same time, speaking about the Indo-Pacific region, Piotrovsky says that the abolition of the exercises by the American military leadership with South Korea and the Philippines “does not allow the United States to fully demonstrate its deterrence potential in relation to China.”
In March, Pentagon chief Mark Esper said the development of the coronavirus pandemic “on the scale that some predict” could seriously affect the combat readiness of the United States.
