BRUSSELS, (BM) – On May 9, the European Union celebrates Europe Day, a holiday of European integration and solidarity.

The European Commission notes in its communiqué that Europe Day festivities are held in 2020 in all EU member states “in exceptional circumstances, as Europe is actively fighting on all fronts to overcome the coronavirus crisis”, learned BulgarianMilitary.com

This year’s Europe Day marks important milestones in the history of the European Union, the communique emphasizes.

On this day 70 years ago, the French Foreign Minister Robert Schumann delivered a historic speech in which he announced the project of creating the European Coal and Steel Association, a coal, iron ore and metallurgical industry of a number of Western European states, primarily France and Germany, opponents in the past war.

The “Schuman Plan” is considered the beginning of the process of creating the EU.

25 years ago, one of the important EU enlargements took place: the accession of Austria, Finland and Sweden.

European institutions celebrate this holiday with an online campaign of European solidarity and unity.

“The goal of European solidarity is as relevant today as ever,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the occasion of the holiday.

“Solidarity was tested at the beginning of the crisis. And then we began to share and help each other: actual solidarity (manifested). This solidarity should continue,” she said.

The head of the European Commission and members of the EU executive board will participate in online events throughout the day, communicate with citizens through video messages, social networks, webinars, video debates, and media appearances. They will hold dialogues with citizens about the key points of European integration, as well as about the future prospects of Europe.

On the eve of Europe Day, the European Commission awarded the Jan Amos Comenius Award for high-quality teaching on the European Union. It is awarded to 22 secondary schools in Europe, which are creative in teaching topics related to the EU.
