ATHENS, BERLIN, (BM) – The incident between the Turkish and German border guards occurred on the Greek-Turkish border in the Maritsa River region. The fact of the incident was confirmed by the German Ministry of the Interior, German Spiegel reports on April 30, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
The German military guarded the border of the European Union near the Greek city of Tikhero in the Evros region as part of the European border forces Frontex. It is reported that Turkish border guards fired at least one shot.
Around 7 pm, when the German border guard was near the border, a shot rang out. The border guard hastened to hide, and his comrades saw through binoculars that the Turkish border guard on the other side of the river had aimed weapons in the Greek direction.
The Turkish soldier showed an insulting gesture and returned to his tent. After that, six more Turkish military appeared, who again aimed weapons at the German military. The incident was reported to the Greek authorities.
Spiegel could not get a comment about the incident from the Turkish authorities.
Germany has been participating in the Frontex mission in Greece for several years. The mission’s tasks include preventing illegal migration to the European Union. Relations between Turkish border guards and Frontex in Evros are reportedly tense.
So, according to Greek city times, on March 19, Turkish officers asked representatives of elite Austrian units: “What are you doing? This is not your country. ” In response, the Austrians replied: “Here is our country, and we are defending European borders.”
A few hours after this dialogue, several hundred illegal migrants tried to cross the border, while the Turkish authorities used tear gas against Greek border guards.
