BEIJING, (BM) – Chinese analysts suggest that India may have problems with the compatibility of two air defense systems – the Russian S-400 complex and the US-Norwegian NASAMS-2, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Beijing news agency Sina.

As Sina experts recall, in recent years, India has taken a great interest in creating a super-reliable air defense system, paying particular attention to protecting the sky over its capital city, New Delhi. For this, the country is buying from Russia modern and expensive anti-aircraft missile systems S-400 Patriot.
“Despite the fact that the Russian air defense system is capable of launching short- and medium-range missiles, this is not his specialty,” Chinese analysts emphasize. “The S-400 is, above all, a long-range missile defense system.”
In order to pick up a good “partner” for the Russian complex, India looked after the US-Norwegian air defense system NASAMS-2. This system is designed to destroy air targets at medium and low altitudes.

India’s intention to acquire NASAMS from the United States for $ 1 billion was announced back in 2018, Sina clarifies. As planned by the country’s defense ministry, NASAMS and the Russian S-400 systems should create an impenetrable shield around New Delhi.
However, whether Russian and American anti-aircraft missile systems can “work together” – such a question was asked by Sina analysts.
“The problem with NASAMS-2 is that it relies entirely on the American-made air defense radar system, while the Indian air defense system is equipped with Russian radar radars: they differ from the American in many ways, it’s difficult to integrate and unify them,” Chinese analysts write.
As Sina recalls, earlier Israel, when developing anti-aircraft missile systems for India, paid great attention to the integration of Israeli radars with Russian ones, which made it possible to ensure good compatibility of the entire air defense network. But with the SAMAM NAS-2 serious problems can arise.

“If the US-Norwegian complex cannot be effectively integrated into the existing Indian air defense network, the NASAMS-2 detection and warning system will work only independently, autonomously, and data exchange will be possible only in manual mode. Thus, the reaction speed and effectiveness of NASAMS-2 will significantly decrease, and this will become a weak spot in the Indian air defense system,” summarized Chinese analysts at Sina.
