“The US Secretary of Defense reiterated US support for building the capabilities of Ukrainian forces aimed at more effective defense against Russian aggression,” the Pentagon press service said in a statement about the conversation.

Esper also “emphasized the need to step up support for Ukraine’s efforts to promote security by the European allies,” said the US Department of Defense.

He praised the recent progress in Ukrainian defense reform and called for “supporting development dynamics in support of a safer and more democratic Ukraine.”

Taran, for his part, “reaffirmed the commitment to transform the defense sector of Ukraine in accordance with NATO principles and standards,” the Pentagon said.
